Vehicle was towed with the linkage in neutral. Because of the long handle it could not be put in neutral at the 4x4 shifter in the floor. The shifter has 4x4 lo lock, Neutral, 4x4 and 4x4 hi lock. The truck was towed in 4x4 gear by the front.
It seems to be stuck in 4x4 still. There could be damaged done to the powertrain by the towing company. Therefore they should be held accountable for the damage and repair that will be needed. You never tow a vehicle in 4x4 it should be carried on a flat-back. Same with AWD vehicles. The towing companies are well aware of this, is their business to know. Make sure to disengage the 4x4, put the 4x4 shifter on the floor in neutral while in park or not moving. If you continue to have problems contact the towing company and hold them accountable for it. See what you can work out with them. If they tell you they are not responsible then contact a lawyer and make them responsible for it.
I see, so its your mess now. It'll be difficult to diagnose your problem over the internet. I will do some research and let you know what I find. In my opinion its still in 4x4 but there should be some indication like a 4x4 light on the instrument cluster or dash. Unless the previous owner removed the light. Or its something more serious.

Did the towing mess something up or do I have another problem. What is stoping it from going into 3rd gear or higher.
The previous owner had the vehicle towed almost a year ago and I have no way of getting in touch with him. I will try your suggestion and thank you very much. You have been a big help.
