On 87 Comanche,4x4, 4.0L inline 6. i fixed the vacuum lines and the 4x4 light came on and no matter what speed as soon as i engaged 4x4 it worked. recently while going down the road i tried engaging it and it wouldn't work, the light was on but no 4x4. once i stopped and went through the gears it would finally engage. what could this possibly be?
Do not run on pavement , it needs ICE or dirt
are you on ICE? no idea,
this jeep, (im on my 3rd and 4rd jap jeep ,total 7.
the jeep is not AWD, its part time. (no center differential)
and will wind up on non iced roads. (you didnt say OFF as in OFFroad) so presume is pavement.
if all that is old hat,? and on ice. then its busted. needs fix\'n
or the lamp is bad, or the sender is fibbing and 4wd works perfect.
do not wind it up.
see crack.
see stop driving on pavement
Testimonial: "roads were snow and ice, ive fixed the vacuum lines. it was only a few weeks ago i did this to my 4x4 working. and it worked all the time, either stopped or going down the road, so what woould make it take so long to engage now"
*and it worked all the time whether i was stopped or going down the road
are you are are you not on ICE? that is the first question, always, for all Parttime 4wd vehicles. what does it worked, mean? lamp on?, or all 4 wheels spinning in mud or ice?
are you on road, , off road. we dont know?./ see?
ICE or snow, or just raw pavement, we dont know that either.
id do things wrong all the time, until reality catches me....
read this link, it tells you how PART TIME 4WD works.
4wd means , selected, an the front lockers work, or its not in 4wd. not really
one guy i knew, thought all this was working , until i pointed out the front locking hub left was , rusted in the UNLOCKED postion. 3wd (kinda but not)

Check the condition of the vacuum hose as it may have cracks in it or it is loose on the actuator.
You will not have on the fly 4 wd engagement in you vehicle so you have to be almost stopped to engage the 4wd action. It is taking so long because it is waiting for the teeth to line up so meshing can occur. Going slow and declutching while engaging the 4wd may be the proceedure you will have to follow.

SOURCE: elec 4 wheel drive light comes on but 4x4 not engaging
change the 2 solenoids on the firewall on the passenger side. they contol the vacum to the acuator.
SOURCE: 1987 jeep comanche has new fuel pump, won't start
The pump is in the fuel tank. You need to replace the fuel pump. it is dying, and will sooner or later die all together. Have you changed the fuel filter????? Also check that out!!!!
SOURCE: Front drive, 4 Wheel drive won't engage
Check the switch on the transfercase remove the vacume lines if there is oil in them the switch has to be replaced and the lines should be cleaned out you should also check under the battery tray to make sure the boot is not ripped that controls the leaver to engage the front axel
SOURCE: 5th. Gear
Sounds like you may have bent a shift fork or your cluster gear has some missing teeth on it now. I would venture to say that is it a bent shift fork. This will require the transmission be removed to gain access to inspect and repair.
SOURCE: need wiring diagram for 1988 jeep comanche 4x4 6
check the solenoid on the starter it powers the ign for starting then switches to run when you let off key, either the solenoid is bad or a wire to the solenoid has come unhooked and sometime they have an in line fuse which can blow.
