learn that all diesels have there own matching parts
and that means pumps ,relays EFI, etc. all parts fuel. for sure.

this is a MAZDA engine. based off their FE.
so you can either buy the Suzuki fsm and read about it or
read up on the mazda TDI controls.
id check compression first. (make sure engine block is ok)
then work controls.

and many diff, diesels depending on your countries smog rules.

did you replace the MAP sensor? I am having the same problem and dont know if I am getting screwed by a mechanic

YOU HAVE 1999 VITARA .I DIDNT SEE NO 1997 DIESEL VITARA. YOU HAVE 1.6 OR 2.0 ENGINE.TO GET A TRANSMISSION YOU HAVE 2WD OR 4WD THAT WHAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN TRANSMISSION.

The turbo unit may have bad bearings and is ineffective. Check the throttle plate to verify that it opens all the way when the pedal is pushed down.
