Any clicking noise, dash lights, headlights? Also try moving shifter through the different gears while trying to start.

It could be the safety neutral switch (ignition switch located at the base of the steering column)..try putting it in neutral, reverse, drive then turn the key.could be a fuseable link blown thats connected to the battery cable, could be a starter solenoid, try jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver to see if the starter engages,if not then hit the starter with a hammer, either the bendix cover is rusted out(really typical with 1986-1991)and causing the starter to gum up with rust or oil or dirt so the bendix sticks down, the starter will not spin unless the bendix is up.,or the brushes are worn out and thats what hitting it with a hammer will do,loosen the brushes up enough to start working a little and then you will know if the starter really needs to be replaced.

Why won't my 97 Ford f150 key work in the ignition when it worked before with no problem

There could be a few reasons why your key is no longer working in the ignition of your 1997 Ford F150. Some possible causes include:
  • The key is worn out or damaged and is no longer able to turn the ignition cylinder.
  • The ignition cylinder is worn out or damaged and is no longer able to accept the key.
  • The steering column lock, commonly known as the "Passlock" system, may have malfunctioned and is preventing the key from turning the ignition.
It's also possible that the issue with the gear shifter could be related. The gear shifter is connected to the ignition and the brake, if something is wrong with the gear shifter it could be causing the key not to turn.
It's recommended to have a professional mechanic check your vehicle to determine the cause of the problem and make any necessary repairs.

If you live in a colder climate you might want to try to spray some lubricant in all the lock cylinders, like wd40.see if that frees up the lock mechanism. In regards to the ignition problem try the same thing,if that helps then you most likely need a new cylinder. If you have alot of miles on the vehicle that is a good possibility.ramundoo

I have towed several of these with same problem. Sounds like to me it needs to go back in for the ignition switch again. Unless it's not going into park. If it's not going into park it would be a shift linkage issue and needs to be adjusted. Chris J.C. Towing & Recovery
