I need step by step directions to find out why the DIC in my 1999 Chevy venture just stopped working. I'm very mechanically inclined, just need some help.
Are you talking about the one in the roof console, near the windshield? With the key OFF: Depress and hold the MODE and the ENGLISH/METRIC buttons. With these two buttons still depressed, turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. When you do this all display segments will light for 2 seconds then off for 2 seconds, then it should show "PS" then turn off. After this, then unit may show E1, E2, E3 or E4. If E and a number (E1) didn't come up, then there are no errors in the System. Turn the van off, then....to set the compass, find your location on the map picture. The number you fall under is your zone number.
Turn the ignition ON.
Cycle the driver information center (DIC) to the Compass/Temperature mode.
Press both the E/M and the MODE buttons for approximately 5 seconds. The last entered variance zone number will be displayed.
Press the E/M button until the proper variance number (See picture) is showing.
Press the MODE button in order to set the new variance zone and resume normal operation.
Note: The features are controlled by outside data. The only feature that is self contained in the unit is the compass, and if it is not working correctly, then the unit is malfunctioning and I would suggest replacing it with a new one.
Perform these steps on more time. If it still does not work right, then the unit will need to be replaced.
Turn the ignition ON.
Cycle the driver information center (DIC) to the Compass/Temperature mode.
Press both the E/M and the MODE buttons for at least 10 seconds until the calibration symbol appears.
Release both buttons once the calibration symbol appears.
Complete 3 360° turns in an area free from large metal objects.
But I would wait before replacing it. Drive it around normal for a day first. If it nothing happens then, then replace it. The compass will not always calibrate right away.

You replace parts as part of your preventative maintenance program, not to solve a problem When working on a problem only component testing will find the issues You need to check for fuel pressure at the motor with a gauge You check spark with a test plug you buy,not ground a plug or wire on the vehicle You can check for compression or cylinder leak down to test some mechanical issues I would assume ALL Fuse & links have been checked,as well as battery voltage 12.6 v or more & cables etc The ignition switch could be bad, turns starter but not all the internal contacts are good
You can try performing a diagnostic self-test of the DIC.
In order to perform the diagnostic self-test and reset the driver information display, simultaneously press the following buttons for at least 2 seconds :
MODE ENGLISH/METRIC The reset is acknowledged with the display showing all segments ON for 1 second . You may only reset the following modes. The reset affects all 3 of these modes simultaneously:
AVG ECON FUEL USED AVG SPEED
If all of the segments light as described above, but the same symptoms are still present follow these instructions:
Symptom: Driver Information Center (DIC) Always Displays Dashes
1. Check for a poor connection or an open in circuit 800 (Tan wire) between the DIC connector terminal 15 and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector C1 terminal 15. 2. If a problem is found with the circuit in step 1, repair the circuit and retest. Otherwise continue to step 3. 3. Replace the DIC and retest
Hi,I just replaced mine.It is not that hard.just buy a manual on it at autozone, and it gives the specifications and step by step directions to dissassemble, and reassemble.I put in new plugs, thermostat, and flushed the motor for around $200.00.runs great!

interior lights and door ajar switch which is in the door and is
hitched to the door latch
I would check to make sure the battery cables are free of corrosion, tight, and dry. The next step would be to test the battery (either with a multimeter, or an auto parts store can usually test it for free). Other options could be the starter connections could be loose/corroded, the ground wiring is loose or corroded, or there is a short in the wiring. Always remember to make sure you disconnect the battery when working with any electrical systems on the car. Negative first, the positive.
You need to replace the airbag clockspring. It is located inside the steering column and is fairly easy to do for the home mechanic. Be sure to disable the air bag system!! You can find this part that any parts store, for about $100.
