I recently had to park my 1997 T-Bird to repair a cracked intake manifold. I had it parked for a couple of months till I could make the repairs. When I finally made the repairs, I tried to drive the car but now, all of a sudden the transmission doesn't want to shift into forward gears yet reverse works just fine (I never had ANY transmission problems before). I checked the fluid level and the level did't show on the dipstick so I started adding fluid a quart at a time unill the dipstick showed full (it ended up taking 5 quarts!!). NOW, it still won't go into foward gears and reverse works fine like it did before. What could be the problem??

It sounds like the shifter lock out solenoid has gone bad.It is a solenoid that releases the shifter when you push the brake pedal.
SOURCE: how many quarts of transmission fluid takes ford
On average it is 8 quarts. You can ask part store and they will also know.

Readjust the band, I have ran into this same problem with another C-4.Found the reverse spool valve was sticking in the valve body. Hopes this helps.
