Most new struts come with diagram you can purchase just the strut or the complete assembly. Recommend complete assembly and replace both sides and have an front end alignment done after installation. If doing your self use caution with compression tool. This tool can also be rented at auto parts store.
This can be purchased seperately from your local parts store...not recommended to change strut without replacing the strut mount too...Hope this helps. (About $25.)
It's best if you can buy the complete strut assembly. Trying to deal with the spring is difficult if you don't have the proper spring compressor even then it's dangerous.
1. Raise and support your car and remove the front wheels. 2. Disconnect the speed sensor and brake line from the strut. 3. Remove the lower strut nuts and bolts from the knuckle. 4. Under the hood find the three nuts holding the the top mount. 5. Remove complete strut from car. Be careful not to damage the CV axle boot.
Remember, the strut is under pressure from the spring be very careful.
Take note of the orientation of the top strut mount so when you go to replace it with the new one you get it in the proper location. Also there is a right and left side so make sure you put the rigth one on the right side and left on the left side.
STRUTS IS SHOCK SURROUND BY COIL SPRING.IF YOU SEE OIL LEAKING FROM STRUT CARTRIDGE.OR CAR BOUNCES RIDE ROUGH.CAR SEEM MORE LOW ON ONE SIDE THE WHOLE STRUT NEEDS REPLACING.MY OLD CHEVROLET GOT 140000 MILES ON IT WITH ORIGINAL STRUTS THEY LAST LONG TIME.
(1) Your front struts are worn out or leaking; or,
(2) Your driving style is too aggressive or loads too heavy for your stock suspension to handle.
Jack the front of the car up and remove each front wheel. Look at the strut body to see if there are any signs of leaking fluid or if anything is broken or otherwise amiss. If the struts are leaking, then I suggest you replace with something other than standard replacement Monroe shocks (either Blistiens or Ranchos). If the struts are not leaking, then maybe your driving style is too aggressive for the stock suspension. If this is the case, then upgrade as necessary or change your driving style. Front suspension upgrade would start at $700 and go up from there depending upon the modifications.
monroe shock and strut recommends 50k miles for shocks, 80k miles for struts. but they sell struts. if they are visibly leaking, with an oily film building around top of strut, replace them. if the tires are cupping in the center of the tread, replace them. if the car seems to have a bouncy ride and take a while to settle out after a large bump, or if you push down on each corner of the car above the wheel and it bounces easily, they probably need replacing
NOT NECESSARILY IN ORDER: Remove the 2 nuts from the top of your shock tower under the hood - remove the pivot bolt at the bottom of your shock fork - remove the upper control arm ball joint nut - remove the lower control arm ball joint nut - bang on the thick metal near the ball joints with a hammer (not hitting the rubber or the ball joint's bolts - remove the tie rod ball joint nut and do the same with the hammer - pull the shock and spring assembly out - You might need a spring compressor to take out the stock spring safely - remove the nut on top of the shock - It's recommended that you replace your shocks now - install the new springs according to the directions with the package - get a camber correction kit for your car - put it back together and immediately go pay for an alignment. Good luck.
II have found over the years that a company called MONROE makes a very high quality strut (around $50 each) and have never had a problem with them, they come in a gas charged strut cartriage and this is what u want, there are others out there but many like BILSTIEN that ride really rough and cost around $100 each
