if you installed an aftermarket stereo, the tail lights run through the illumination. make sure all wires are hooked hot to hot and ground to ground. if you installed it while battery was hooked up and touched a wire, most likely blew a fuse
The only thing that both the brake lights and tail lights use is a ground connection. Keep in mind the warning light on the dash may be for any exterior lamp. You may need to check the sockets and grounds on all four corners of the car.
hello same pronlem with my 98 durango but right turn signal!
what it was is the 4 pin connector for the tow package had the insulationripped off them i guess whe backing out of a steep driveway it sxrapped! so the headlights, turn signals, and brake circuits where grounding out! quick fix!

ignition switch may be bad not cutting electricity to car when shut off. the way the ignition switch works, is that when car is shut off, there should be no electricity going through it. if in doubt or ya need help, go to any auto parts store and buy a haynes manual, they are based on a complete teardown of car for about 20.00, make sure you buy one for your make and model and year vehicle.also check main ignition fuse in fuse box.
Check all the bulbs at tail end for parking and brakes, test grounds and harness for trailer. Check fuses. clean batery terminals, Re instal head light swich properly and make sure all wires conect.
Vitally
I had a similar nagging problem once, though I do not recall the dashlights being involved. For me, the lines from the brakes went up the steering column to the turn signal. I pulled the wheel and inspected all the connections, and just like that everything worked again. I believe I could have tugged on the wiring harness without pulling hte wheel and obtained the same results.
