When I take my car to be smogged, the smog machine says it cannot connect. I've checked the OBD plug and the wires and the connectors all look ok. When they did a voltage reading through the OBD while hooked to the smog machine it read 5.9 volts they said it should be 12 or 13 volts. They said check my battery. I had a load test done on the battery and it was good also checked the alternator it was charging at 14.2 volts. I can hook a hand held computer to the OBD and it works fine. Any ideas why it won't connect to a smog machine ( actually 6 different machines ) ??
The term "flash" has to do with the on board OBD2 computer flash memory. New software updates or sometimes performance tuning will be programmed to "flash" this memory effectively changing certain preset values such as ignition timing and air/fuel tables. Most cases i have experience with are for the performance market but have been developed in accordance with factory guidlines.

I just bought the car so I don't know about the ECU.
I have talked to the dealer and they want me to bring it in and charge me $136.00 just to look at it. I have hooked up 3 different hand held computers to the OBD more than once they have all connected fine and show no error codes. What is flashing the ECU mean?
Has a VW dealer had anything to say or have you not consulted one yet? These problems can arise after ecu flashing or sometimes tuning. Keep trying different obd2 readers my friend sometimes i have to consult a friend of mines equipment if mine does not work. Best of luck.
Im sorryu i see that on this page it's a 2000. Do you know if the ECU has been flashed before?
It doesn't speak german....just kidding what year beetle my friend?
