I think for every automobile you have to do this. You can always get a Haynes Repair Manual it should tell you how to do it step by step. If you are a do it yourselfer this investment will pay for itself many times over with the job your trying to do. By the way, what makes you think you have to remove it? The only reason that I can think of is because its leaking. If it is the case you need to check where is it leaking from, it could be fixed by tightning or replacing a hose you never know. But to answer you question, yes you have to dismantle every thing. I haven't heard of any automobile having the heater core outside the firewall where the engine is located. They're always well hidden not visible nor reachable inside the dash. I'll say it again get a Haynes Repair Manual for your 01 Dakota. You'll find a lot of answers there.

How do i fix the heater in a 1999 dodge dakota sport i was told i have to drop the steering colomn and dashboard.

Before resorting to replacing the heater core, first verify that the thermostat in the engine is operating properly. Sometimes the thermostat will stick in the open position. When this happens, the coolant does not get hot enough to provide sufficient heat. Also check to make sure that the heater core is not clogged up with rust or other debris. You can do this by disconnecting the heater hoses from the heater core [done from under the hood]. Place a garden hose against the upper metal tube and turn on the hose. Water should come out the lower hose without a lot of restriction. If debris or rust comes out with the water, flush the heater core out, using the hose, until there is no debris and no restriction in the heater core.
Replacing the heater core is a big job. I would suggest that you entrust this to a pro, unless you have lots of experience working on cars. The video linked below gives an outline of what is involved. See

Changing Heater Core in 1999 Dodge Dakota
tip

No heat in Dodge Dakota

for some reason the Dodge Dakota heater core tends to plug up and will stop heating the car. the replacement job is big as a/c lines have to be removed etc. this happened to my daughters 1997 V6 Dakota and she was told she needed a new heater core for $700 when in Colorado last year. she had the system flushed and the antifreeze changed which helped a little. i checked it out and backflushed the heatercore itself going the opposite direction of normal flow and a small plug of junk came out and the problem is fixed. consider this is you or someone has the same problem. it is because there is a 90 degree angle in the inlet and outlet lines of the heater core just behind the firewall. good luck. hope you can save some money and stay warm with this tip.

2001 dodge dakota wasnt blowing hot air from heater replaced thermostat took hoses off heater core blew out hooked up top heater core hoses filled radiator with fresh coolent until it was coming out bottom...

There is a tap or valve on the heater or hose that controls the hot water to the heater radiator, make sure this is working and not closed or broken.

Truck blew upper radiator hose changed that and thermostat still over heating think its air bound any way to bleed 2001 dodge dakota

remove the radiator cap, leave it in park, start up and let it idle. turn on the heater so the air gets out of the heater core. give it 15 or 20 min. after it reaches operating temperature. if needed, do it again. also remember your thermostat may be bad

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 5.2/ V8 4X4 and was told the Firestone service Rep that my water pump and thermastat were defective. I could smell coolant both outside and inside the truck. Also when the heater...

If the heater core isn't leaking it doesn't likely need changing. It sounds like you could have a problem with the heater control valve - a valve in one of the heater hoses that controls flow through the hose. If you smell coolant and see moisture on your windshield (inside) or have coolant leaking onto the floor - you might need the heater core replaced.

Need to replace a heater core on a 2000 Dodge Dakota Can some one tell me step by step how to do this ?

this repair is very extensive if you have limited ability then do not attempt,,,,,, the steering column has to be dropped. entire dash removed, ac freon recovered coolant drained below core then the heater box assembly has to be removed as a whole then disassemble heater box to replace the core then reverse procedure.
