Turn key, engine grinds but won't start

Had previous events of not starting this year...thought it was battery, but after charging, it started. today, as above, the engine grinds but won't turn over. Neighbor came to re-charge battery but said, after looking under the hood that it wasn't the battery...more likely the selenoid(sp) or a fuse.

Sometimes not getting power to start can be the simplest thing. Make sure your battery is getting good connection, take the battery cable off the battery post and clean any corrosion off between them with wire brush, pocker knife or battery post cleaning tool. When finished apply a thin layer on the post inside of battery cable, of petroleum jelly or grease (this will slow any return of corrosion). Reapply battery cables to battery post, do not over tighten. If the battery is over four years old, there’s a good chance it needs to be replaced. Do a load test at your local automotive parts store. It could be the solenoid on the starter, the part store can test that too but you’ll have to take it off most likely. If it’s none of these a automotive store can help you determine what the cause might be, I find they are generally helpful in determining the problem. Most you can borrow the tools to fix it from them, or if you don’t feel up to doing it yourself, they can recommend a local garage or dealership to fix the problem.

I have a 2004 Mercury Sable which is just like it and recently had this problem. It ended up being the starter solenoid. I hope this helps you!

SOURCE: 1997 F-250 won't start.

I assume you have enough gass.

What are the sounds you are hearing.
Does it tick or make the common sound before it starts the engine.

If it ticks and doesn't make the common sound it's plausible you have a problem with your "start engine" (don''t know the english term) or a problem with a fuse.

If it makes the common sound but doesn't start, check all the cables if its fitted. See if the filters are clean (especially the fuel filter).

SOURCE: ford contour wont start battery charged lights working

If headlight do not come on, leave them on and start check ground and power.
If headlights do come on then locate the starter and fine something to tape on it, not too hard,
but before u can do this have someone set inside the car with the key turn in the start position...

Car won't start without a jump but battery okay

wont crank or wont start.??
no car starts , if it cant crank. (unless push starter (M/T magic)
that is not a trans sensor its the PRN switch.
ill answer for, wont CRANK !
it wont crank even with a good battery (charged) or jump started.
1: bad start
2: bad wires to same.
so hot wire the starter small wire, the key start line is tiny.
cranks. , starter good, no crank starter bad or cables bad.
if it cranks hot wired, then the key line is dead.
easy, huh?

My 2004 Honda Pilot ran fine then a hour later won't start. At first thought battery so we charged up usig one of those chargers you plug in. Lights flicker, and clicking sounds but won't turn

Check batry terminals are secure & free from corosion, check security of earth strap to engine & main power wire on starter, if ok have the batry load tested to ensure it can perform under load as the starter needs a lot of current. Have you tried a jump start?

Battery is new, engine won't turn over.

The voltmeter should only go as high as 14-15 volts when the engine is running. I would check for a poor connection between the battery and starter.

My 1990 subaru legacy lights up but won't turn over~not a sound.

your battery may not be charged enough to crank and start the vehicle or one of your cables may be loose so the connection is not there.

Having problems with turning over......

do you mean engine rolled over or cranked over and would not start?or is it that the starter would just click? or did starter sound like it was wineing and you had to keep on and off the key until it findley started? if any of your answers to thies questions is yes (except first question) its time for a new starter. as far as the grinding noise don't worry about it, that's what makes me believe its the starter. install new starter, problem solved.
