I have a 97 dakota with a 3.9 that started missing and hesitating to the point it was making the truck buck and lurch. It seems to happen only until the coolant temp reaches 220 degrees. While the truck is doing this, it does not want to shift into overdrive. I noticed that during this problem, the tachometer jumps all over the place and the air bag light comes on.

SOURCE: No interior heat / engine overheated 97 dodge ram 1500

Coolant runs through the heater core regardless of whether or not the thermostat is open or closed. Otherwise your heat would work poorly in cold weather as the heater would stop working each time the thermostat closed to let the vehicles engine maintain the necessary temperature for efficient operation.

Thermostats also don't make noise when they open or close, so the noise you're hearing is not the thermostat.

The noise you're hearing is probably air moving through the cooling system. This happens when you're radiator is low on coolant. The same coolant that keeps your engine cool is also what delivers heat to your heater core. When the system becomes too low on coolant, there's nothing to transfer that heat away from the engine so the engine overheats and the heater stops working. There is probably a little coolant still in the system, which is why you're hearing noises as the water pump continues to try and pump whatever it can. As bubbles of coolant make it through the system, you'll notice the engine temperature fluctuate up and down.

Often times in older vehicles, the fill line that runs from the plastic reservoir to the radiator becomes plugged, so you may have plenty of fluid in the reservoir while the radiator may be nearly empty. You have a very slow leak somewhere. I have a slow leak on an old Jeep of mine, and it runs fine until one day the level of coolant drops below the point where the water pump can easily pump it, and I begin to experience the exact symptoms you describe: Strange noises, heater doesn't work, engine temp runs hot then falls, etc.

Another possibility is that your water pump is damaged. A damaged water pump will not pump well, preventing coolant from flowing through the system. As the pump spins very quickly since it's driven off the engine, a damaged or out of balance pump can often make pretty noticeable noises.

SOURCE: 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan Air Bag Light comes on intermintently.

ok the most common guess would be the rotating flat ribbon contact under the steering wheel that provides a moving connection to the airbag from the steering column wiring. the part is called a clock-spring contact, it is coiled up and winds and un winds as needed when u turn the wheel, they are a very common problem in all airbag equipped cars, no matter the make or model, they all use a similar part.

Take a look at the down shift cable and make sure its not broken especially were it connects to the throttle linkage. And maybe try cleaning the electrical plug that plugs into the trans. Its about a 7 to 9 wire plug. They tend to collect water and short the wiring out.

SOURCE: 2001 Dodge Dakota Overdrive does not engage

Do you know that there is a button in the end of the shift lever? If pressed, it will disengage overdrive.

97 2500 diesel starts bucking like it is starving for fuel. After letting it sit for 10 minutes it starts and runs fine for 10 miles and does the same thing.

Overheating issue which is making the car management system go into limp mode ...check the dash when this happens...there should be a yellow icon flashing whilst it slows and lurches....if it is doing this get it to a garage where they can do OBD checks to read the error codes off the cars ecu.most likely oil sensor or temp gauge for cooling system is causing this as it seems to correct once the car/ truck is allowed to cool down.if it was fuel then this would happen almost straight away.

97 3.9 dakota when it's cold outside and I start my truck it'll start right up but idle down til it quits . Start it again and it will idle.. Go down the road and it misses bad until it warms up. After it...

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, rough idle esp when cold and stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

How about the pick up coil in the distributor? A trick we used to use back in the day was to tap the distributor housing with a hammer, key word tap. If the engine missed or stalled than the pick-up coil was replaced.

Pardon me if im wrong but there might have been a recall on that years model for the IAC motor. may not apply here because i dont know what rpms your at when it happens. Also watch your gas dodges are notorious for water in the gas tanks. I have a 1998 and it still does some of what yours does until it goes to closed loop and its truly warm(have to keep my foot into it until then or it will trip the knock sensor after a while.)This ethanol gas is horrible when you get below a quarter tank. hope this helps
