Heater in the van is not putting out heat. Cold air is blowing out. The settings are on heat. I bought the van from my brother, he says there is something he needs to unplug or disengage for it to work. He said it was not the thermostat, do you have any idea of what the problem may be or what he may be talking about unplugging? 1989 Chevy Astro Van custom made.

needs the water system back flushing out, heater being cold is its blocked up some time a few back flushes and forward flushes with a hose pipe should free up the dirt inside, same with the engine and radiator. there are meany videos on you tube to help you understand how to back flush you engie. but do the radiator and engine and heater separate so the muck does not go back into the engine.
check antifreeze level add if low, and check intake heat control valve on ps side of intake if its locked shut it can be removed and a water pipe nipple put in place of it and the heater hose reconnected..if the water pump is good, it should give heat this valve should be on the intake with a heater hose connected to it..and its vacuum operated but will jam shut with age and cold weather..good luck..
If all the vents are working correctly, I'd say the heater control valve isn't opening when you put it on "heat". I believe it's vacuum actuated so find the heater hoses running to firewall on the passenger side of the engine compartment and make sure the line hasn't come off or the valve is stuck shut.
If it is blowing hot air out of the defroster and not out of the heater vents then the door that directs the heat from the defroster isn't working properly it is blocking the heat from going to the heater vents. Also check the cold air door. It sounds like it isn't closing all the way to shut off the cold air and not letting the hot air pass.
