SOMETIMES VEHICLE (2002 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE) WON'T START. YOU GET NOTHING WHEN YOU HIT THE KEY, NO CLICKING, NO NOTHING. YOU MAY GO BACK LATER AND IT WILL START. GAUGES GO CRAZY. WILL COME ON. ODOMETER AND CLOCK WILL FLASH. SOMETIMES SPEEDOMETER WILL GO FROM 60 TO ZERO AND BACK. WILL NOT LOSE POWER THOUGH. YOU CAN HAVE KEY OFF AND SOMETIMES GAUGES WILL TWITCH. JUST NOTICED THAT WITH KEY OFF IF YOU HIT THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS THAT GAUGES WILL MOVE. JEEP DEALERSHIP CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT AND NEITHER CAN MY MECHANIC. MECHANIC THINKS ITS A ELECTRIC PROBLEM? WHAT ABOUT IGNITION? OBVIOUSLY THERE MUST BE SOME JUICE GETTING TO GAUGES WITH KEY OFF. ALSO, JEEP IS IN WON'T START MODE NOW. I NOTICED WHEN HITTING KEY AND TRYING TO START I GET NOTHING....NO LIGHTS, BELLS, OR WHISTLES. YET IF I SHIFT JEEP INTO NEUTRAL, CAR WON'T START, BUT THE GAUGES ON DASH LIGHT UP, AND BELL GOES OFF??? I KNOW NOTHING MECHANICAL SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT ANY OF THIS MEANS, BUT THOSE THAT SHOULD KNOW SEEM TO BE HAVING TROUBLE ALSO. THANK YOU
Poor grounding can cause many of the conditions you have listed. When checking power with a volt meter, this goes unnoticed because the meter does not draw enough amperage to cause the bad connection to break contact. Your battery is grounded to the engine block and also has a small lead to the fender. Many components have individual ground leads as well (including most computers) I would check all ground leads and clean the contact surfaces with sandpaper or a wire brush. Adding an additional ground wire is a good idea as well. Don't forget that the dash board frame must also provide a good ground as well.
Many times this is all you need to do...sometimes though, control modules can be damaged because in having a partial ground, they build up heat, due to additional resistance in the circut.
This may or may not cure your problem, but it's worth checking out. Grounding is often overlooked, especially if it has not completely broken down.
that is why live testing work.
live means with normal loads,
so voltage drops are real.
V= I x R, if I =0 there can be no voltage drop, ohms laws.

Try checking the ground on airbag control under drivers seat. I have very loud system and I guess mine vibrated loose and was causing all kinds of weird and crazy stuff to happen. Took me like 2 weeks to find it and completely fixed all issues in about 5 min. Regardless of where it might be, sounds like your having grounding issues
Did the grounding solve your problem?? I am currently going through this same problem with my 2003. I was driving on the highway and the gauges started going crazy. Stopped and turned off the car, and when I tried to start it again, it did the same as what was listed above (gauges twitch, doesn't turn over, no power at all). I went and had my battery replaced and that got me going but noticed the amp meter moves back and forth a little.
Check grounds under the hood , watch this video ! could also be the TIPM - totally integrated power module . Google TIPM . Chrysler , Dodge , and Jeep all use this module . Chrysler Pacifica TIPM Electrical Problems
Check your battrry mabe it not clean end you have corrosion
juste clean end try start again
Sometimes corroded battery wires close to the terminals is the problem. You cant see this corrosion, because of the wire isolation. To check if this is a possibility, switch the headlights on and try to start. Will the lights go dim or completely out? If yes, then check first the battery itself. If ok, check the wires for corrosion.
I had the same problem on my 2004 jeep Cherokee Laredo,
i cleaned the battery post with a thick sand paper and the problem is fixed for now!!! good luck.

Usually answered in minutes!
Went out to start my 2004 Grand Cherokee 4.7L V8 this morning, and I experienced a similar problem. Car would not crank at all, and dash gauges start twitching like crazy. When I turned off and removed key, gauges continued to twitch until I put into gear. When I tried to start again a few minutes later, battery was acting dead, because nothing lit up on dash. Took battery out of car and it tested OK. I had no problems yesterday with car. Bummer! Came onto this forum to see if maybe it was the alternator. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

have you tries changing the big black relay in fuse box, on drivers side
I am having this problem with my 2007 chrysler 300.Panel going crazy.Car dies out.I had it tow to dealership.I hope its not alot.
open the front doors on the insie of the door frame there is a black tubing that covers the wires. cut or pull back this will show you a bundle of wires some will be broken, put them back together with black tape or a crimping tool. this takes about 20 min. problem solved.
company put wrong size wiring in door jam that goes o
sorry wrong size wiring in front door that goes to fuse box under dash. see above statement
The Jeep Grand Ch. have an issue with it's anti theft system. It plays with the computer and sets off a chain of events that gets worst as different people try to fix the symptoms. Look for ground points and work with a faulty antitheft system in mind. Good luck!

"OBVIOUSLY THERE MUST BE SOME JUICE GETTING TO GAUGES WITH KEY OFF". sure I'd yell too...
and easy to find using a meter. a magic tool called a volt meter, or ammeter.
this is called phantom drains,
aka, dark current,(or as jeep calls it IOD, Ignition OFF , Drains)
and the checks are easy and logical
the first steps are pulling fuses until the drain stops. this tells the tech, what branch on the TREE is faulting, a BIG CLUE THAT.
the no crank : is covered here.
does not crank, use the word crank and win.http://jeepdied.com/no-crank.html
the phantom drain is here,
sounds like wiring hacks to me.. but... im not there looking..
http://jeepdied.com/phantom/phantom%20dr...
here is a tip for 42RE jeeps. transmission owners.
the TRS switch is what allows cranking to happen
and that switch if not grounded will never allow starts. the 4L has a P/N switch.
that also must have a good ground.
when it dont crank we:
see if the ASD closes?? (for spark and fuel)
and if the starter relay closes. first
if the Starter relay is dead, we scan it,,
next. (after testing fuses related first)
if the relay does not close.
that means the key line is dead. TRS tops list.
then we crank in Neutral. like the operators guide instructs you how to do.
OP sent by 5 bit Baudot code via this.
in 1976 I had a IMSI 8080 and ASR33
so I too was there, doing that then.
S100 nut then, home and at work.,
so dont feel bad , with challenging gear.
he was not shouting, just digitally challenged.
Clean battery terminals, wires, maybe install new battery clamps. Bad connection can cause gouges to go nuts.
