I have a 1999 Volvo C70 with a broken drivers door. The lock inside seems to work and the handle is functional. I think the latch on the outside of the door attached to the car is broken. How do i remove it?

SOURCE: outside sliding door handle?

Yes. It is a difficult job, but not impossible. The hardest part is actually removing the interior door handle. Here are the steps.

  1. remove the interior door handle by pressing the door panel in and prying out the C-ring retainer clip
  2. remove the lock slide switch bezel with 1 screw, then insert a blade on the bottom left of the slider between the slider and bezel, and release the clip, the slide the bezel toward the rear of the vehicle and pull out
  3. carefully unclip the door panel around the lower edge and sides and lift the door panel UP and off
  4. remove the interior lock slide switch with 2 screws
  5. pull back the plastic vapor shield part way to expose the mechanism
  6. there is a cable that runs from the mechanism to the exterior handle, unclip it from the door frame
  7. there is a rod that drops down from the door handle to the mechanism, release the rod from the plastic clip
  8. locate a large (likely black phillips) screw next to the door handle on the EDGE of the door, remove it
  9. locate a 10mm screw on the inside behind the door handle, remove it
  10. locate the final 10mm screw behind the handle through an access hole, remove it (careful not to let it fall inside the door)
  11. the door handle will push out through the door part way- there is another C-clip securing the lock cylinder that will need to be removed, and the lock cylinder can be pushed into the door cavity
  12. pull the door handle through the outside of the door skin- the door handle assembly is still attached inside the door by the latch cable- the cable can be easily removed from the handle assembly to remove it completely
  13. you will likely find that the end of the door handle itself is broken off- don’t buy a new handle! Email me and I will show you my free and possibly better solution that will likely last the life of the vehicle dbonnell1972 at yahoo dot com
re-assembly is the reverse of the removal

linkage on inside of door has come undone. take off inside door panel and you will find a small rod that goes to the lock mechanism where the door closes opposite the hinges. follow the handle to the door lock.the nylon bushing may have broken.they are cheap to purchase at auto part stores.

Driver's side door won't open from inside or outside

Check the linkage between the lock cylinder and the lock; when the latch was loose, the linkage may have broken or otherwise disconnected. The lock/unlock rod to the latch will be accessible inside the door for manual operation rather than using the lock cylinder or interior lock in the door panel. If this is the rear door on the driver side, additionally check the position of the child safety lock; when this is in the ON position, the inside door handle function is disabled. Why will my drivers door not open, even though it locks and unlocks with key fob.

Sounds like the activator rod that goes from the door Handle to the latch is disconnected. You will have to get the door open to repair it and a good mechanic or tow truck driver can use a slim Jim kit to get the latch to release and then you can pull the door panel and find the problem.

Door latch stuck on volvo c70

It sounds like the actuators (usually stiff wires) from the door handles and locking knob are OK, which means the latching mechanism itself is probably jammed or broken.

You'll need to remove the upholstered panel covering the inside of the door (search online for "how to remove a door panel") and investigate, pulling on various rods or cables to get the latch to release. You may have to temporarily remove part of a plastic water shield under the door panel to gain access.

If you can get the latch to release, unbolt it from the door (usually from its side), spray every part of the mechanism that you can access with a light lubricant like WD-40, and see if that helps. Try operating the latch manually by pushing with a screwdriver to see what happens. Look for any broken or jammed components or connectors.

If it still doesn't work, but all the related handles and knobs appear to be connected and moving properly, then the latching mechanism itself is probably at fault. Removing it is usually a matter of disconnecting all the control wires or cables, but take notes on how they connect so you can re-assemble everything). New latches are available from the manufacturer, or you can probably find a used one online. These are normally very reliable items, so I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used one.

OK... the drivers door on my 1999 Volvo C70 will not open, it seems the cable has broken off the lock striker. How do I remove the striker from inside the door?

I am not 100% sure on this as I did it on a '96 960, but once you get the door panel off, there are two screws holding it on (from the 'outside' and you can then fish it out from inside the door. They were T-27, if I remember right.

It was pretty simple to do, the hardest part was getting the panel off and getting my hand in there.

The driver side door lock wont go all the way up.

The outside door handle spring is broke ,or the latch spring is broke. The only way to tell is remove the door panel and inspect the rod from the handle to latch. Look for broken spring on handle. I have installed an external spring from the handle rod to latch to keep the rod in the full up position.

There is NOT a mechanical connection to the outside door handles on the front doors. There is an electronic "door popping solenoid" This is a electronic problem. I think there was a recall on this.

Door won't unlatch or come open

Ford had a problem with the door handles not working properly. They are cheap plastic. If the exterior door handle is broken, you will need to drill out the rivets that hold it in, and then get the door open and the panel off. You have to disconnect the rod going to it. Then, remove the handle. If you don't want to drill again, I suggest replacing the rivets with a bolt and nut easily obtainable at your hardware store. I've found that a M7 bolt works very well. If you are having a problem with the interior door handle, it's the same problem. Remember to check your door latch because if your exterior handle is broken, then your latch isn't working properly. I got one at Ford for about 40 bucks.
