EGR stands for EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION.

This is a loop back system between your exhaust manifold and the underside of your filter.

The EGR valve is located between the inlet (exhaust manifold) and the outlet (intake manifold).

About 8-12" below the air filter....toward the passenger side.

EGR carbon built up can be clean.

Check the soft membrane on the EGR valve and see is it crack/torn. If it's in good shape then you may reuse it.

The professional use a vacuum hand tool to determine the travel of the EGR.

There are carbon built up inside the EGR air passage tube too,

Make sure you give both a good cleaning.

The EGR base gasket MUST BE REPLACE!

Order one before you start the job.

I need to know if my 1993 toyota corolla is a 4 or 6 cylinder . where do i find this inormation on my vehicle?

pop the hood, look for the spark plug wires, count em. since that is a front wheel drive, the V shape of the engine will be a front/back setup rather than a side to side so there will either be 2 on the front and 2 on the back or 3 on the front and 3 on the back. it should be very simple to locate as the wires typically run overtop of everything in the engine compartment. the wires usually come in blue, yellow, red, grey, or black and are about 1/4" in diameter and run into the front of the engine in your particular vehicals engine.

Toyota Corolla DX 97 Engine Light EGR valve PLEASE HELP

You can try cleaning the EGR valve and passages with Seafoam. A bottle costs just a few dollars at any auto parts store or discount store. With the engine running, squirt/spray it in through the brake booster hose, or through the PCV hose. This will cause smoke to come out the exhaust. This is normal and will disappear after a few minutes. If Seafoam does not do the trick, then you can still disassemble the EGR valve from the throttle body and clean it with throttle body cleaner.
