Had some work done on the clutch and need to change the transmission oil. But I cant seem to find the place to pour it in. I heard it might be underneath. Can anyone help..
The transmission filler plug is located on the side of the transmission itself, must be done from under neath.suggest you use a suction type gun to get the fluid out of the bottle and into the transmission, if you need further help just get back to me.please rate my fix as i strive for the best. Ray

i cant get that slang, DIff , gears, clutch to jibe. 1990 wrangler YJ
what does DONE mean.?
front or rear diff axle new, new transmission? what?
1500 to 1800 rpm 15 is engine stalled, or rpm of oil tanker ship.
got a MANUAL stick or automatic slush pump gear box?
but is no way to answer. you.
its a hydromatic A/T. right>? AUTO?
if yes,it has.
no electronics then. so clean AFT/ levels per operators guide not guessing? hot?
stall test pass (ask)
line pressure tests pass
kick down cable not stuck
or if M/t do say so, mine is, 5 owned..
but we only have one word here, sluggish to work with,
so that can be :
1: engine weak? (low rpms in all gears, and low power)
2: Trans slips (or flares) High rpm and low power (slip)
which is it?, the rpm in each gear answers that.
the FSM shows the range of rpm for each gear. ever seen a real FSM book? factory service manual.
Yes on the rear diff. There's a plug on the back of the housing about 2/3rds the way from bottom. Remove that plug and stick your finger in to first knuckle and bend it down to check the fluid level. If you get oil on your finger tip, it's got oil in it. If not, put oil in till it's at the bottom of said hole. Put the plug back in a tighten it and You're done.
Sounds like the trans needs to be rebuilt as it's been abused. The clutch may be dragging during shifts and not completly disingaging or a lasy driver does'nt pust the clutch in all the way. If the clutch isn't the problem the oil in the trans should be ATF and if someone put in 80-90 it'll do this but jumping out of high and the shifter isnt itting the floorboard as a bad trans mount or motor mount may let happen, The trans is damaged and a used unit is cheaper and quicker to get done. Rebuilding the trans with all the parts it may need cost more than your truck is worth
If you need to ask, you have never done one. I suggest that you get a chiltons or haynes manual to guide you through it. tips are: use large bolts without heads to guide the transmission back onto bellhousing so you don't need to hang the unit on the clutch disc and risk bending it. Change the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft if it's the least bit worn, be very careful not to damage the crank sensor on the bellhousing, and use a good pilot shaft when aligning the disc inside the clutch cover. spread some white lube on the input shaft and front guide collar on the transmission and make sure the throwout bearing has sufficient grease in the inside groove. good luck!!!
Hello grega1967, your Jeep Wrangler came from the factory with gear oil in the axles and manual transmission, but the transfer case uses transmission fluid. It is a NP231 and your axles are Dana 30 in the front and Dana 35 in the rear. They should have a 4.10 gear ratio due to you having a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder.
pull the lower plug from the transmission, it will be on the bottom or the side on the bottom. replace the plug after draining and remove the fill plug wich is about half way up the side of the transmission. use 75w 90 gear oil in the trans.
good luck
