Mechanical fuel pump?
Testimonial: "I have no idea. its automatic transmission. I haven't had the truck that long. And am a girl. Ok you can laugh now. I now know what the part looks like so I will go try to locate it"
Can anyone tell me is it located in the tank or someplace else someone said on engine side.
73 pumps were located on the engine. usually a oblong looking part. It will have 2 mounting bolts and a fuel line in and out of it.
thanks

First off, you should turn the key on and see if you can hear the pump hum for about three seconds. You may have to take the cap off and have an assistant listen for the hum. If there is no hum, locate the relay. It is under the hood in the fuse block. The bottom of the cover should tell the location of it. Most of the relays are the same so swap out an identical one. Try the key again. DON'T TRY TO START. Just see if there is a hum in the on position. If there is no hum, try striking the center of the gas tank with a rubber mallet. One solid blow is enough. Listen again for the hum. It may start, but your pump is definitely bad. It may not start again. To change the pump, siphon the tank as low as possible. Disconnect the wiring, the filler tube and the two straps holding the tank under the car. A new pump will have the rest of the instructions for the job. Good Luck. If the pump does hum, you don't have a problem there. Check for spark. If you have the quad4 engine, check the coil pack cover for wear. It's like an inverted distributor cap mounted to the bottom of the cover, it is white plastic and can break down with age and mileage. If you have another car, have the coil packs tested. Oh and if you do hear the fuel pump turn on, try replacing the fuel filter before dropping the tank to change the fuel pump. Good luck.

sounds like a fuel pump problem. if you have ran out of gas, the fuel pump probably is burned. with the new battery the engine crank?? if your answer is yes, im sure the problem is the fuel pump.

Your on the right track with the fuel pump test, chanses are its the pump thats went out. its best to have two people one to turn key and one to listen out side of car, the best way to hear if it runs. Now don't be fooled just because you hear the pump it can run and still not put out any pressure, thats ware the test comes in.

I have the same problem with my 86 GL 4WD. One day it started to turn, and then lost all power. I couldn't even turn on the lights. I have played with the ignition switch wires, and gotten it to fire. I think there may be a short somewhere in the switch or the wires to the harness, but I have not isolated it yet. You might check your ignition switch and wiring...

Thank you I am praying fuel pump most everything on this truck is still original. I thought this pump was outside the tank, guess I will crawl under and go look.
Not the fuel pump, pumps fine, no power to distributor, no power to ignition fuse. if my coil pack is blown would I get power to the ignition fuse?
