Re: How do I take off the head on a gm 3400 engine
Its a rather long process, so I would recommend getting a repair book or shop manual. The intake manifold is part of the head so it has to come off too.

Not really.
The 3100 is a Chevy 2.8 and the 3800 is a Buick engine.
Most everything is different including exhaust manifolds, engine brackets, and wiring.
Go to Motors Manuel on line or Chilton auto manual on line or public libaray , look up vech. by year and engine and specify head bolt torque . U will need to rent/buy torque wrench auto parts stores are a good rental /loan source. There is a pattern check manuals.
The lifters are hydraulic, so adjusting them is not possible. The lifters can take up very little play, so valve ticking when cold is normal. I have had two of these engines. Be sure to have the heads torqued properly, to keep play at a minimum.
yes, the heads can be removed with the engine in the van, make sure to have the heads tested for cracks, the 3400 V6 has a bad problem with cracking.....HAVE FUN
