After filling my gas tank Car run rough at low rpms when in drive

It happened a few months back & then cleared up. recently it hapened again. After filling my gas tank Car run rough at low rpms when in drive after a couple weeks it started running rough in neutral also. If I keep the rpm's up when going slow if I put it in 1st gear and then 2nd then if I keep overdrive off it runs better. If I don't it runs rough at low rpm's

Hi Lots to look at to trace this problem. Make sure that the belts are tight.

    Hi
    Check the easy things first before starting to replace expensive electronic parts.

    If the belts are old or loose or oil got on to them they slip.  This slipping of the belt or belts will cause the engine to run rough at low rpms.

Fill up your gas tank and ad a bottle of Lucas gas treatment/lube to the tank, be sure it's the treatment in a little clear bottle and not injector cleaner. After you've added the gas and treatment drive the car, with the head, driving lights, radio, heater, etc. all turned off. It may take ten miles or more but the check engine should go off and car will run normal. NOTE: Never jump start your car or use it to jump someone else's without referring to your owners Manuel.

Son let his car run out of gas, and when he filled it this code appeared with rough idle and stalling code 2002

I had a something similar to this happen to a girlfriend of mine. She has a 98 escort and it ran out of gas and the service engine soon light came on after she filled it up. If this is what your talking about check your owners manual. Most of the time if there is really nothing wrong with car you can drive it around ( Generally 20 min in town and 10 on the hwy with 4 idle periods (4 times of the engine being at idle) - do not cut engine off) and the light will go off. The rough idle code most likely happened when the engine ran roughly because. it was running out of gas.

Is the gas tank above 1/2 tank now?

A worn / aged fuel pump will fail when it's hot and the fuel level is low (example: below 1/4)

Park your car in a cool area.

Start the car when it's cold outside,

===
Check the engine fuel pump pressure.
===
Replace the fuel pump relay,fuel filter,fuel pump and fuel pump stainer at the same time.

Sounds like your gas guage isn't accurate. A fuel pump is not designed to draw fuel from the tank until it is completly dry. This is to avoid sucking up all the debris on the bottom of the tank.

ROUGH IDLE

You have rust particles in the float bowl. The easiest thing to do is remove the side cover of the carb (the thing that unbolts, with a sight-glass on it) and spray carb cleaner into the float bowl until it is clean.

Rough, chugging when driving and conking out

Could also be a faulty mass air flow meter, or throttle position sensor. It's hard to tell, you need to take it to a shop to be properly diagnosed.
