I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee on the way back from a camping trip a few weeks back we developed a humming noise in the front end we stopped to check it out and couldnt hear the noise in park so we jumped back in and proceeded the sound was only while accelerating we were about ten minutes from the nearest town and during the drive we developed a slight metal grind noise as well again only while accelerating so once home we had my brother in law change the bearing assembly on both side of the front end and the sound still continued my father and rother in law are both know what they are doing if they knew what to fix but at this point we are stumpped any ideas???
SOURCE: Grinding noise
well that could be a few things check your brak pads and rotors also it could be a wheel bearing on its way out it sounds a bit like that
SOURCE: Grinding noise, metal to metal noise in front end
Get your truck up in a rack and take a look at the drive shaft, the differential, the u joints and the ball joints. Regards, joe

I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee - the same problem, except my interior lights flash on and off at the same time. Did you get your problem solved?
SOURCE: whining/grinding noise at deceleration
If the noise is on decceleration mostly like it is the pinion bearing in the diffrential. Could possibly be spider gears as well.
SOURCE: I have a grinding/scraping noise when driving
Good Evening, those noises can be annoying and sometimes hard to find. However it sounds like you have a front hub assembly going bad. Usually the noise goes away when you veer one direction or the other. I have heard some transfer case noises but they usually do not go away on turns. Check those front hub-wheel bearing assemblies and see what you come up with. Hope this points you in the right direction.
