2002 Saturn SL1 has transmission problems, lost reverse and second gear> Can this car be saved

  • Anonymous May 08, 2009

1996 saturn sl1 - no reverse and does not shift well from low gears.

As I have spoken with many, many people on this, I intend to change the transmission valve body, as it is a manufacturer defect, from bad casting or machining.

The pressure is not enough to get the gear to engage (Reverse) as the valve port is too wide.

    Good luck.

Sorry but no. Check your fluid level and see if your transmission fluid is burnt. Good luck

DO A TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE.MORE LIKELY TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP.TRANSMISSION NEED MORE FLUID PRESSURE WHEN GOING IN REVERSE.STOPPED UP FILTER WILL RESTRICT FLUID PRESSURE.TRANSMISSION NEED GOOD FLUID PRESSURE TO OPERATE CORRECTLY.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 with an automatic transmission. The car will not operate in reverse. The car appears to operate well in forward gears shifts smoothly.

Common problem with several causes. The neutral safety switch could be bad, will need some knowledge and a scan tool to diagnose. Also valve body could be bad , will need to have a professional look at it most likely.

99 Saturn SL1 when stopped and then put in reverse

That I'm not sure about yet. Do me a favor and pull the trany dipstick and put your nose really close to the fluid on the stick and see if it smells burnt.and is the fluid red or brown.

2002 Saturn SL1 - Losing reverse and second gear

The simple answer is that there are two loose nuts in the transmission.

The output shaft nuts are loose. The are behind a cover that you can see through the driver's side wheel well.
