The first time and sometimes not the second time but will start on the third try, it's like the starter is relaying? In fact once I tried to start it the second time and when I let the key go to try for the third time it started by itself (didn't have to turn the key again), very confusing.....
SOURCE: Pontiac Montana starting problem
All 4 power wires go together on the large center stud on the solenoid.
The purple wire goes on the small stud.
The purple wire supplys the trigger signal when the key is turned to the start position.Since your solenoid is clicking when the key is turned to start this is working properly.
I would check battery connections and then check power connections on solenoid again.Make sure all connections are clean and tight.
SOURCE: need to replace starter
should be 2 bolts 15mm and then 2 nuts on the starter 13mm and 8mm. this is a very easy starter to do. make sure you remover ground battery cable before doing this starter.
good luck,
michael
SOURCE: Changing the starter solenoid on a 2000 Pontiac Montana
On your van the solenoid is attached to the starter. If you can get a solenoid separate (i don't know if you can) then you will need to take the starter off and remove the solenoid (2 screws holding it on) and the wires (on red and one black i believe) pay attention to which wire goes where because you don't want to reverse it on the new solenoid.
SOURCE: Replaced starter because of clicking sound
Check that battery connections are clean and check engine ground. Also find what's clicking and make sure it's well connected and working (likely the relay you are looking for.)

Fowwow the large red wire from the battery and it will lead you to it. It will be on the lower part of the engine near the flywheel.
