it's possible you might need to just change the trans case fluid.... it's a pretty simple task, i usually do all the small minor work first before i take it to a dealer to fix.... if they said you need a new trans case, but didn't tell you why, more than likely there might be something you could do yourself to make it better... those service men have been working around vehicles long enough, they should be able to tell you exactly what's wrong!
i would also do a tranny fluid change to... some of the noise could be coming from there too -- when you change either fluid, add a little lucas transmission fluid stabilizer, it helps alot with seals and makes the fluid stick to the gears better...

One of the sensors has gone bad and needs to be replaced, the other thing to that would also do that is the ABS sensor is dirty or needs to be re gaped to the speed ring on the hub. There was a issue bulletin with your Tahoe on the ABS activating under 8 km/h. Good luck and hope this helps, if not clean out the sensor with brake parts cleaner and check the wire harness and ABS sensor bracket. Re gap the sensor to the speed ring hub. Here is the bulletin. i have had this problem since about 6 months after i bought my 2001 impala. the problem is in the hubs. the wireing that runs throw them rubs together and eventually shorts the traction and abs. easy solution to fix it though. get into the hubs and wrap the wires. otherwise take the car in and explain the problem to them and exactly what you need done. 9-10 times they won't fix the problem unless you tell them what you want done. it is really simple and going to the dealer should only cost you about 100 to fix.
check the wiring from the tailights back to the fuse panel, it sounds like an open connection. if i recall correctly check under the dash on the drivers side near the fuse panel for a bunch of wires in a bundle and look carefully for a wire or two that are cut/shorted/or seperated, you can also check under the drivers side kick panel by the hood release.
