I have a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L V8. Lately (2 months at most) it looses oil pressure when I come to a stop .The gauge dings , when I start driving again it goes away. When This happens I'll have to put 2- 3 quarts in to get level back to ''safe'' on dipstick. It happens about every 600 miles or less. I have no visible leak. It does smoke but doesnt look blue ...more white .Any advice would be a start. Please help.______Mark E. State College,PA

No the oil on the dipstick is maybe a little dark in spots but mostly about the same as when you put it in.Coolant looks ok. The smoke does continue while driving. just when start it up.I will definitely get the compression test done.
Does your oil on the dipstick look like chocolate milk? Does the antifreeze in the engine coolant reserve bottle look dirty, brown and greasy? The white smoke plus these other things are symptoms of a blown head gasket. Oil can get into your coolant, and coolant can get into your oil. You should stop driving your truck and have a mechanic do a compression test on the engine. It will show if the head gaskets leak or not. If coolant is getting into your oil, the engine bearings are going to be ruined. My guess is that most of the oil is being burned but the white smoke usually is from coolant leaking past a head gasket and turning to steam in the exhaust.
