Timing chain rattles when car is turned on but only for a few seconds. car runs great. took valve cover off to check if anything was loose. noticed that timing gears were reverse. intake is on exhaust cam and vice versa. set tdc. crankshaft and camshaft gears line up where there suppose to. chain was replaced about a year ago and has no copper or silver links to align. can the cam gears being reversed cause loose chain at at fixed guide side only. should i swap the gears to see if it takes care of loose chain rattle.

You the beginnings of what is known as the reverse slam. If caught early enough it is fixable. However, most times a rebuilt valve body is in order. I do it for around $200. For the record any late 1992-2002 valve body will work, those are the type II. Type I won't work and is 1992-early 1992 years.

The simple answer is that there are two loose nuts in the transmission.
The output shaft nuts are loose. The are behind a cover that you can see through the driver's side wheel well.

Continued operation like this and $100 would have been the cheap fix. If this is a hydraulic clutch, check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Most take Dot 3 brake fluid and it will say on the cap. It is located on the fire wall near brake master cylinder
SOURCE: terrible rattling noise in engine when a/c turned
hi, there is a very common problem in these saturns with the upper front motor mount breaking and causing this rattling sound when in gear, that might be problem with the noise. you can check by placing the vehicle in gear(reverse or drive) and foot on the brake very hard, apply quick bursts of the gas pedal to make the engine surge. if there is a mount broken, you will see the engine lift up, or out, but you may need someone to watch from the side of the car to pinpoint the mount. now as far as the servie engine light, i would need to know the codes it produced from the pcm to help answer further, there could multiple issues in one circuit. post a reply to this thread and i will check again if you have the codes for me to look at and try to help you further there.
Testimonial: "Thanks am having mechanic check codes tomorrow. I will mention the motor mounts."
