94 Camry shift solenoid problem

My camry shifts into all the gears great except overdrive. It is intermittent and so is the O/D light on the dash! When I press the O/D button, the light goes off and it shifts into overdrive and after a few seconds, that light starts to light up dimly and gets brighter and the car shifts back to third and wont go back into 4th. Do I have a faulty connection in a shift solenoid or a bad solenoid? What else could it be?

It is the shift solenoid.. the solenoids are like a fuse and they pop easy and go bad all the time

Thanks for the response! So where is the shift solenoid located? I'll replace it and see what happens.

A 94 toyota camry le 2 door v6 transmission drive gears not workin but park and reversole do

There are really only 2 possibilities which are within your reach

- low trans fluid level, check that with engine idling
- poorly adjusted shift linkage, see p69 here

If anything else has failed, like a shift solenoid, it's really a job for a specialist.

A light on dash saying o/d off came on

There is a small button on the gear shifter. This is the OverDrive switch. When the button is depressed "IN", the overdrive system is active, and the light on the dash is off. When the button is OUT, the overdrive system is de-activated, and the light on the dash is illuminated. The OverDrive is basically the final shift of the transmission, which gives you maximum fuel economy. When the light on the dash is ON, the OD is "OFF", the transmission will not make its final shift, and will lower your fuel economy. It is best to leave the button IN, and have the OD system active. Hope this helps, and Thanks for Choosing FixYa. The graciousness of a "FixYa" rating for my solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for allowing me to help you with your issue.
