does the car have automatic climate control?

if you mean no air is blowing,i'd say your blower motors cooked or heater panel blower switch/or blower resistor may have melted

fine the broken vac hose under hood next to fire wall and ac box

Possible blend air door malfunction.

the heater vacuum motor and lines needs to be checked.Also get the blend door checked.

air blows out only defrost possible cause could be faulty ac and heater mode switch or broken vacuum line to ac and heater vacuum actuator.you have to remove ac and heater control switch to check it out.

You have a vacuum leak in the system that controls the vent doors. First check for cracks at the vacuum reservoir, then check the various vacuum hoses and vacuum motors for a leak.

Consider a blocked heater core.

This does sound normal to me. When the defroster is switched on, the AC engages to help the defroster be more efficient by acting as a dehumidifier before the warm air hits the windshield.
It is possible that the AC system may be over charged with Freon. But, I must put my faith in the mechanic and that he is honest as many are and has done you well.
