The light being on has probably put the car in "limp in" mode. Its a kind of fail safe system to allow car to be driven to a shop for repairs. You need to have the code or codes read by scanning the engine computer, repair the problem, erase the codes, and then you should be able to drive it again normally.

TCC(Torque Convertor Control(lockup)) sensor.Or another transmission control sensor. Bad sensor will cause erratic shifting. If your Check Engine light is on a code should show. Don't hesitate in getting a 2nd opinion. Try having Autoz... or another parts place hook it up. Add some Trans-x or other trusted additive to trans. fluid. Servos could be gummed up. WARNING: If you drive too long/many miles like that something really expensive will break.

This should be a relatively easy fix. The reason you were having problems starting the car is because the neutral safety switch was not being fully activated or is broken. Now it seems the shift linkage is either broken or something has come loose. You will need to remove the center console to get to the linkage and see what the problem is. But before you do that check the linkage at the transmission. The shift cable may be broken.

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL FIRST BUT IT SOUND LIKE YOU NEED A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE IF TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION PUMP CAN DRAW FLUID THROUGH CLOGGED FILTER.WHEN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION GET HOT FLUID WILL GET HOT AND THIN ENOUGH TRAVEL THROUGH FILTER SO CAR CAN SHIFT INTO OVER DRIVE.DO A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

If it is running rough & no check engine light on then the first thing I would to is tune it up. If you have a check engine light then pay someone to diagnosis it & go from there. Usually when the light comes on there is a more promenient issue; that is WHY the light continues to flash.
