That is a broken or rusted fuel line. It only leaks when the fuel pump is running.

My friend had a similar fuel smell and leak on a 1997 Seville SLS.
We had checked the fuel rails around the engine which had been replaced under warranty from nylon fuel rails to stainelss steel fuel rails. So you might want to check what type of fuel rails you have.
We kept smelling the fuel fumes every so often. In fact it got so bad that one day some of the fuel had leaked out ran along the fuel rail and then dropped on the exhaust. That was all it took to cause a mini explosion from the fuel vapors. Fortunately, it didn't cause any real damage and the car was stopped and turned off at the time.
It was discovered that the fuel pressure regulator had a leak and that was where the fuel smell was eminating and the eventual leak.
Replaced the fuel presure regulator and all was solved.

Getting spark fuel but won t start

If it is a fuel line you would smell and see gas drip where you park most likely, unless it is up over frame and drying prior to hitting the ground which is possible. Smell gas while parked? Get up under it and look for wet spots on fuel line. Are you getting fuel through line? Pull from under hood and check pressure.

Smell gas not everyday no puddles no dripping

might be the RETURN line back to tank, most overlooked fuel line in the world, sends unburnt fuel & FUMES back to tank & or engine, recycled fuel. these lines rust, rot, subject to salt corrosion, etc., OR, vapor leaks from the evaporativeemissions control system (charcoal canister filter clogged) check condition of all hoses (vacuum) and fuel ...... or your main fuel line is leaking you just can't see it without a complete, thorough inspection !!!!! is fuel fliter leaking @ filter? connections ......

92 Jeep cherokee Laredo....u can smell gas while it's running and just after it's parked also after driving i can hear dripping coming from around the gas tank but haven't seen any dripping or...

The first and most important thing is to stop driving the vehicle IMMEDIATELY!

All modern cars and light trucks with gasoline engines use a relatively high pressure fuel system, with the entire system pressurized from the tank up to the engine, as well as a return flow circuit. Depending upon the nature of the leak, you have a serious potential for a disastrous fire to occur here, because the leak, if on the delivery side of the system, can spray the fuel out in a fine mist that will travel quite a distance and is very easily ignited. Return side leaks, while at a somewhat reduced pressure, are still to be considered a serious fire risk.

Older vehicles with engine-mounted pumps maintained the pump inlet line (the line from the tank) at a slight negative pressure while in operation, so leaks there were less serious while also being more likely to kill the engine.

Now ... as to the leak itself... All that you can do is to get under the vehicle and LOOK! There will visible evidence of the leak. It is possible that the leak is the tank itself, a line connection to the tank, the tank unit seal, or even the tank filler neck. However, if the leak occurs during operation and for a short time afterwards, but then stops, I'd bet on a delivery or return line problem.

Once the location of the leak has been pinpointed, the proper fix can be determined...

Hummer 2006 smell gas but nothing drip

usually the top of the fuel tank is rotted out from wet mud sitting on it. The fuel sloshes and soaks the mud via the perforations in the tank.

Car Fuel Smell

You rubbed through the fuel tank or cracked it and it has a small leak. They make a fuel tank repair kit you can by a a auto parts store some times they work and sometimes they don't. If gas is spraying or leaking on the exhaust you could have a fire. I have drained a tank and put a screw with a fiber washer in the hole and then covered it with a 1/2 inch if silicone rubber it lasted for 5 years. Your fuel lines and filter are usually up on the side of the frame and should be ok

Fuel smell in 2005 , f-150 just when I stop at a stop light, cannot smell when driving. Very heavy fuel smell.

If it is fuel injected, I would inspect the injection system. I had an injector that was leaking an puddling gas on the valve cover area. If not that, then generally check around for a leak in the fuel system / tank.

Have a small coolant leak dripping onto transaxle

It could be as simple as a leaking hose, but it may also be a corroded alloy hose fitting nipple.

Get is seen to by a mechanic before it fails completely, causing complete loss of coolant and expensive cooked motor.

Fuel leak, strong gas smell inside and outside of car

when you look for a fuel leak, make sure the engine is running. the fuel lines will be pressurized and you are more likely to spot the leak. if you see fuel squirting, be careful since it under a lot of pressure. it might look like a single strand of a spider web. also, you should wear eye protection since gas in the eye would be a bad thing. needless to say, don't light a match or lighter for light to find the fuel leak. since gas is explosive, you probably should take it to a shop if you can't fix it. it could be dangerous if gas drips on a hot part. fuel vapors are explosive too.
