Our 2000 dodge durango was working fine. we went to get gas. gas cap broke and car wouldnt start, just a single click, but wouldnt actually start. lights and radio still work perfectly fine, so im guessing battery is out of the question. we had car towed back to our house, bought new gas cap, didnt start, tried again, and the car started. took it around the block twice and came home. car will not start again. what could be the problem?
Get your battery tested and clean the terminals,ALL of them. At the starter also. If it checks out then get your starter tested.
Could be several things, start by loosening, then re-tightening the battery connections, and the connections at the starter. If the headlights and interior lights stay on brightly when you turn the key and only hear a click, that's either a starter or solenoid problem.
Be sure it is in fact the right gas cap. Often when you purchase from someone like bumper to bumper etc the parts people get the wrong info. I suggest you go direct to the dealership pickup a cap and see if that solves the problem.

Have you tried turning the engine over with a socket on the crank bolt.
SOURCE: car suddenly wont start radio, wipers, gauges wont work
Very possible you may have a faulty voltage regulator. I would have it tested which many places do for free.

Check the battery cable ends to be sure they are tight and wont twist, I had this happen on my 96 grand caravan two years ago.

Start out by replacing the oxygen sensors. The electrical system and fuel delivery depend on the O2 sensor to be in perfect condition. If you still have these flashing and flickering lights after you replaced the O2 sensor then then next thing to replace is the ECU (also known as a PCM or vehicle computer) Click on the link below to view the parts you will need:

I think you can fix this yourself, I just need you to get out the book everyone fears (the owners manual).I want you to go to a section in the book called fuses and relays. Now, in the book, they will have a diagram of the fuse panel with numbers on it, right by that, is a page with what every fuse is use for( find the one for radio, mirrors). now look at the number for what you need, and at the picture of the fuse panel. on the fuse panel, remove that fuse( it will be a 15 or 20 amp fuse if I remember right). replace the fuse, and you should be working. If you are not working, You can request more help from me in header line. when trouble shooting a problem, you start with the simple, and work you way up. With so much not working, I would start with the fuse. If not, I will have you check some wiring connections next. But I pretty sure it's a fuse. I hope this helps
