How to replace ignition switch on 2003 Olds Alero without removing dash

I'm having problems with the tumblers in my ignition switch and I needed a lock smith one day because the switch wouldn't turn I thought he would be awhile because according to the manual you have to take half the dash apart to get to it, but this guy was done in 20 mins so I know there is a shorter way

You don't have to remove the dash. Remove the radio and the instrument cluster. Then you can unhook the ignition switch bracket and work on it through the hole where the instrument cluster was

SOURCE: I am seeking location of

Disconnect Car Battery
I replaced the ignition switch in my wifes 2000 intrigue. (ignition mounted in front dash). I had to take off the knee bump trim and the trim around the instrument housing and remove the instrument cluster. Leave it connected and just lay it on the dash. You also need to remove the radio to get to one of the screws that hold the ignition switch module. Once you get that loose you can pull it out so you can disconnect the wires going to it.
If you need to replace the ignition module insert the key and turn to accessories, there is a small metal button to push in, then your key and the lock part will fall out to install into your knew ignition module. At that time you can also remove the cruise control cable.
I am not a mechanic and the whole process only took me an hour or so.
I replaced my ignition module to fix the heater and AC operation. It also fixed the cruise control that hadn't worked for a year.

My guess is the ignition needs to be replaced. check to see if theres a recall for it. 2 years ago on my 2002 alero I found a recall for the flasher switch which was causing intermediate directionals and 2 more for the computer

2002 Olds Olero /replace ignition switch

remove your radio, there will be 2 bolts to undo, switch will slide into dash, unplug harness turn key to remove cable, if ignition wont turn you may have to take ignition apart to remove cable. reinstall in reverse procedure. will need to relearn new key to be able to start. try to start, leave key in run position, theft/security light will be blinking. leave on for 15 min or light stops blinking, turn off turn back to run without trying to start. leave on for another 15 min. turn off then start

I ust replaced the ignition switch on my 1999 Olds Alero and it still won't start what is with the 1999 Alero i have $500.00 in this car and it still gives nothing but problems

The alero was one of the most troublesome cars GM ever made. That sucks, I know. But the good thing is that the security has been such a problem that people have found ways around it. Go to this link for a ton of info and a good permanent solution to your problem.

Took my ford focus to a dealer because key would not turn either way. They said it was the tumbler and would have to be replaced. They jusy called and said they installed new tumbler and reprogramed the...

The reason that the key wouldn't turn must have come from a malfunction of the ignition switch or the connecting rod, rather than the just the tumbler. Since the dash lights & gauges work now, at least part of the ignition switch is working, but apparently not the part that's engaged when the switch is turned to the "start" position.
By replacing just the tumbler, the dealership tech would have jiggled the connecting rod just enough to reseat it (and fix the jam that was causing the key to fail to turn in the tumbler), but didn't fix the real problem, which seems to be a worn out ignition switch or worn connecting/actuating rod.

2003 alero dash light won't shut off

Sounds like either a bad ignition switch or a back feeding circuit. Try unplugging the ignition switch to see if the lights go out. If they do, replace the switch. If they don't, post to tell me.
