About a month ago my "low fuel" light came on and withing minutes of the light coming on my car cut out. I put about a gallon of gas into the tank, and it started right up. Yesterday the car cut out again. My gas gauge needle was on a quarter tank. I put 2 gallons into the tank, and the car started up. I drove to the gas station to fill up the tank, and I was only able to put 15 gallons into the tank. The tank holds 20 gallons, and I put about 17 gallons into the tank (15 +2). The question is why does the car act as though the gas tank is empty, but infact there is plenty of fuel left in the tank? I don't think it was a fuel pump or fuel filter problem because the problem is cured with more gas in the tank. Please Help.
Thanks
David
If the fuel gauge drops off when you are driving then its a sending unit problem that means you have to drop the tank and replace the float and sending unit. This is a common problem for alot of cars because of cheap gas. If you have to drop the tank check the fuel pump canster for dirt because of cheap gas. Replace the fuel pump strainer and fuel pump filter. If the car or truck has about 100,000 miles you might want to change the fuel pump at that time also just to cover your back. If you take it to a shop they will charge you at least $900 to start. But if you do it yourself it will cost you about $200 dollars maybe alittle more.

The problem is that there is gas in the tank and the gauge is reading the amount properly, however, the engine acts as though there is not gas, as it cuts off. Once I place more fuel into the tank, more than 4 gallons, the car runs great. Again the gauge is working correctly, the car runs perfectly so long as I maintain more than 4 gallons in the tank. I know this because the tank holds about 19 1/2 gallons, and every time I go to fill the tank I cannot put more than 16 gallons into the tank. Would a fuel pump not work if the tank is less than 4 gallons? Would the fuel filter not allow fuel to flow if the tank is less than 4 gallons?
Thanks.

My 2002 expedition will run out of gas as soon as light comes on or maybe even a little before if it is on a downward slope. I noticed that when I put gas in it, there is pressure when I undo the cap. The engine will stumble if it is running when you do this. Has anyone figured this out for sure?
