When Engine light came on 2009 Mercury Sable and got P0442 diagnostic code so how bad is diagnostic and how costly to fix?

code p0442 refers to evaporative emission system(EVAP)--small leak detected==causes-- hose connections,--intake leak--EVAP canister--EVAP canister purge valve
it also refers to large leak detected ( loose fuel cap/missing cap) causes--mechanical fault--hose connections---EVAP pressure sensor
If it has just started then check that the fuel cap is on tight or replace the pressure sensor or lastly ( it will probably the most expensive) the purge valve.

Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or

2005 Hyundai Elantra P0442 code?

The code means the computer has tried to vent the gas tank and has found a small leak in the vent system.

Hi, a P0442 is Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak). Start with the simplest thing first, make sure the gas cap is on tight. If it is, replace it with a new GM part (not a cheap aftermarket one). If that doesn't fix it, there are more steps listed here:
