Water pump The water pump has been leaking. How do I take it out? So far I have removed the alternator and I am trying to remove the airconditioning unit. I have no manual.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

dont remove any pipes from the air con unit as the gas is VERY poisonous. you need to get a qualified person to remove the gas out of the system first.

is the water pump belt driven?

Sorry, I just threw out an '88 Subaru manual over the weekend. I have owed the same car before. I think the water-pump is in the front of the engine. Unless absolutely necessary, you don't have to take out the A/C unit. You could take out the radiator/hoses to give more room, then take out the water-pump. Remember: first-out....last-in. !

Water pump is leaking, how do I replace it?

Remove the belt (remembering how it goes back on, drawing the belt routing usually works) I find it best to remove the two top shroud nuts 13mm. Also removing the air box will allow for access under the alternator. Two 10mm bolts hold in the water pump. Clean the sealing surface.. install new water pump and gasket. Re-install components. Top up lost coolant making sure air is blead out, otherwise you will run into overheating issues.. Good luck

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.

CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Loosen but do not remove the four coolant pump pulley bolts.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6. Remove the lower splash shield.
  7. Remove the air conditioner compressor drive belt.
  8. Remove the lower alternator cover plate bolts, loosen the alternator adjusting bolt, and remove the drive belt.

Water radiator problem

When it does not pump the water at all the engine brakes after few miles.

Check if there is any leak in the water lines, or in the radiator.

If there is no leak, that means that the water is being vapourized inside the engine because of a defective head gasket.
When this happens you often can also get white smoke coming back from the exhaust.

You probably need to replace the head gasket.
