You drove with a flashing check engine light and then with it on solid. Flashing check engine light means STOP DRIVING and get it fixed. So this sounds like an abused and neglected car to me. Get the trouble codes read that are stored in the computer. Check for good fuel pressure and spark. Fix one or both.

Sounds like your alternator is not working, if you can get the engine running and have access to a volt meter check the voltage on the battery terminals, With the engine running you should see in excess of 13V
It is an Amber check engine lite that comes and it tells you there is something wrong in the computer system or an emmission control device. Take to local shop and have checked. If it is flashing do not drive "TOW" only
This warning is telling you that a major fault has been detected and if you don't get teh vehicle into a repair shop you could seriously damage part of your engine or transmission. You need to have this diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible.
