How to turn off Eco feature off?

When I am driving (2009 Odyssey), Eco light going on and off distracting. Is there a way to turn this off?

Thanks,
Moorthy.

  • Manny Vega Feb 28, 2018

no you cannot turn it off

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2018

I am surprised no one here mentioned the VCMuzzler or several similar devices available on eBay or other places. They all add a bit of resistance (82 Ohms typically) to the temperature sensor circuit so the computer is fooled into thinking the engine temperature is slightly below the 167 degrees F where it allows the VCM and (and the ECO light) to activate. Check Odyssey and Pilot forums for a wealth of information and discussion. Our 2010 Touring typically gets 25 MPG on the highway without the VCM engaging and 20 MPG around town. I can live with that in lieu of $1000 motor mount replacements and other costs of damage from the shaking and vibration when the VCM kicks in and out. I read that Honda actually broadcasts noise canceling sounds on the stereo to try to mask the vibration noise. So... you can in effect turn it off with no side effects other than perhaps 1 or 2 MPG loss on the highway but a big gain in avoiding repair costs.

The Eco setting on the Honda's are pieces of ****. My Odyssey shakes and rumbles when the cylinders cut out and continues to shake while this setting is on. There has to be some way to turn this annoying, ride destroying, setting off. It's a computer that does this and computers can be turned off. The problem is no one wants to tells us how.

Eco light on means: your car is able to run with 3 cyl instead of 6 cyl, this is an automatic system of Honda for saving gas purpose.
The more you see ECO the more you save gas. Hope this help.

The shaking when the eco function light is on is probably caused by a weak or bad coil pack on one of the 3 cylinders that is firing when the light is on. im also a master technician who owns a honda pilot and think this is one of the worst ideas honda ever came up with. it does cause excess wear on the cylinders that are always firing. i am looking into turning off this feature in my pilot, and yes there is a way to do so. it may not be cheap though. will update with more details.

Just unplug one of the sensor connector. Your engine light will come on but the ECO will not work.

Sorry, Moorthy, But this system cannot, and should not be turned off.
I drive the same car as you, and believe me when I tell you that you will get so used to it that eventually you will not notice the light anymore.
Like my colleage above said: This is a good feature in your van, and is what allows you to get such good gas milage.
Happy Motoring!

but my odyssey gives only 17 mpg in city even after ECO

  • mtous2162 May 03, 2011

If your Honda vehicle is equiped with Variable cylinder management (or the "eco" feature as some people call it) and you experience vibration when some cylinders are turned off, you should know that this is NOT normal and take it to a dealership. If the dealer tries to tell you rhis is normal, ask for a supervisor or a manager. Complaining about it in a public forum will not help. Not even a little...

  • mtous2162 May 03, 2011

Also, keep in mind that several things affect gas milage: wind, weight and spirited driving will affect the efficiency of any engine. All vehicles (Hondas included) are testee for gas milage in a controlled environment, on rollers, with no wind, the least amount of weight on the vehicle and slow acceleration. These conditions favor a large car, since it is not affected by wind or weight. I can get 434 miles out of my Odyssey (2006 Touring, de-paxed, with 81,000 miles on it) That is more than I got from my Sienna and my old Plymouth Voyager, etc. 17 mpg consistent in such a large vehicle is not bad at all in the city. Try to go easier on the throtle for a week and see the difference. Also, if you can, remove the lugague rack cross-bars when not in use. That helps some.

  • Info Junkie May 22, 2011

    mtous2162,
It is not the light that people are complaining about, it is the excessive vibration that occurs when VCM turn off half the cylinders. This cannot be a good feature when it causes excess vibration as everyone knows excess vibration causes everything to wear out faster than it should to say nothing of just the annoying vibration and sound.

  • Anonymous Oct 29, 2012

Yes..Info Junkie..its not the light that im concerned about..its the shaking of the car that concerns me that maybe there is something that need to be done or something to fix it from shaking...

I have a 2006 Touring. All motor mounts replaced. One half shafts replsced. New rotors. New tires. Wheels are true. HATE the ECO function. The car feels like it has tire problems that comes and goes with the ECO light. Just a mess. I would HATE to take it on a long drive.

The above answers are not the problem. We have a 2012 odyssey and they're built to run like that
Everybody complains about the same thing. My parents have an eco button in their crv which shuts it off on demand. Why didn't Honda give this option in the odyssey? I'm bucking up and dealing with it until Honda comes out with one that doesn't have it. By the way, anybody else have a constant whining sound in their odyssey when sitting still? Other than the kids? Just wondering.

Sounds like the motor mounts have failed. The mounts are electrical that are supposed to cancel out the vibration when the eco mode is engaged, if the mounts have lost their liquid they will likely cause a vibration due to the unbalance of the crankshaft spinning. hope that helps

yeah -- mine are shot and they are $500 EACH to replace! this ECO system is a JOKE! it does not save gas... just costs you money in repairs!

I got a 2006 touring odyssey with the frustrating eco light and vibration. Saving gas HA every time it does that I seem to be giving it more gas so it kicks out of that drive mode. There must be a way to shut off or Honda better get a recall coming soon. And the run flat tires.....again another dumb idea sooo expensive to replace.. What happened to Honda reliability

The ECO light on my car turns on and off sometimes when I drive. What does this mean? Is something wrong with the car?

This likely is not a vehicle problem but more related to the operators driving characteristics. It has been included in the features of this car to to provide the driver the opportunity to enhance his or her driving skills to improve the efficiency and reduce harmful effluents polluting into the environment.

When you are hugging the tree (Driving in a environmentally friendly way) the light is on.

When you tromp it or petal to the metal your not being not so eco friendly to the environment and the light goes out!!

So the game, try to keep the light on all the time.

Hope this has been a help?

2013 Hyndai Sonata red flashing light on BOTTOM, LOWER driver side dash

I'm not familier with the dash on the new Sonata. I would suggest looking in your owners manual under the chapter that explains the features of the vehicle which should give a picture of the dash and explain each light in the cluster. If that doesn't show it and what it's for, look in the section that deals with the anti-theft system. More than likely this is what it is I am guessing having to do with anti-theft. If that doesn't tell you about the light and how to shut it off then just take it back to the dealer. Due to the fact it's a 2013 it should still be under warranty. That's the best I can suggest.

if this problem only happens when the eco light is on, then you prob have a bad rear engine mount. these vans have active front and rear engine mounts. when the engine is in VCM mode(operating on 3cyl) the front and rear engine mounts control the engine vibrations. when the rear one goes bad it connot control the engine vibrations. the rear mount can be visually inspected for failure(if its resting on itself), or on a test drive with the active noise control turned off. or engine brake torquing.

Yes, that is completely normal.   The cylinder deactivation feature is designed to activate based on a combination of throttle position, and engine load.  It really has nothing to do with the speed of the vehicle.
