Question about 2003 Saturn ION

Starting problem for 03 saturn ion when engine is warm

Could it be the starter engine coil/chip?

I just bought my 2003 Saturn Ion on Jan 31 and I had this same problem beginning 2 weeks ago. My car only has 50,000 miles on it and after doing research on the Internet, it seems as though this is a common problem with the Saturn Ion, all years. It has happened to me twice so far and each time I waited 15 mins and it started again. I have read that people have tried everything from getting the ignition switch replaced, to making extra keys, to actually cutting the passkey wire under the steering wheel (there is a video on YouTube that even shows you how to do this!). Apparently this is a common problem with this car, among other problems and now my coolant message keeps flashing when I shift into a higher gear. I sure am sorry I bought this car because now I worry whether it will start whenever I drive it! Good Luck!

Hello kshane53
What you've described are the classic symptoms of a bad starter drive. The easy fix is a new starter. If I understand you're question correctly, the engine turns over a couple of times then kicks out and you hear the whining till you release the key. If thats the case a starter will cure it.
Also be sure to inspect the flywheel for any chipped teeth when you change the starter.
Hope this helps.

I just finished rebuilding my truck engine and will like to test it before installing back in the truck. I know how to get the starter going, but I don't know how to wire the coil, distributor, alternator...

To start the engine you need a+ feed from the battery to the + side of the coil[this acts as an ignition live,to be disconnected when not testing the engine ]Next you need a heavy + feed directly from the starter to the battery[use good heavy cable]Also a good heavy earth lead from the battery negative to the engine block[jump leads work great]Connect the distributor contact breaker wire to the coil - side.To start take a live+ wire from the starter + to the "pull in" terminal of the starter[this is a male spade connector and the lightest terminal on the solenoid.when you connect the starter to the battery + the engine should turn over,Check for a spark using an old plug earthed to the block, add some fuel and listen to that baby run.
