Windshield wipers will not turn off - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Can not get the windshield wipers to turn off. they will turn on high speed when the switch is changed, but will not quit working when in the off position.

I also can not locate the specific fuse that will pull the power

I have the same problem. No intermittent. Just regular and high speed and will not turn off when the switch is in the off position. The fuse is located on the left side of the dash. Open the driver's door and the panel is there.

I guess I'm going to replace the switch first.

Same poroblem here. Wipers on operate in high or normal speed but will not shut off. Pulled the fuse but was wondering where this module was. Wondering how difficult it is to change out. This sounds like a defective GM component. I bet there are more people whio have this issue.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

sounds like a bad control module or bad ground at wiper motor.

I have the same problem. Just had low or medium speed and would not shut off. Just replaced the switch assembly and it will not shut off. I have high and low speeds now though.

Fixed the wiper problem which was identical to Brad's by changing out the wiper module which is also called a pulse module or something of that nature. Pretty easy fix. You have to remove the grill that the wiper blades protrudes from in order to get to the motor (4 clips in front which can be removed by hand, remove radio antenna, a center push down retainer, two plastic end caps which pop off and then 1 star type screw on each end under the end caps). Getting the blades off seemed difficult. I used a small puller to pop them off after removing the nuts.

You can't buy this module at a regular parts store. I had to get it from the dealer so be prepared to spend $130 to $140 for the part or go to the salvage yard. Works great now.

I had the exact same problem where my wipers would not turn off or run intermittently on my 2003 Chevy Silverado without having to pull the fuse for the wipers (that is scary when you have to open the drivers side door on a busy freeway to pull the fuse to turn off the wipers! YIPES!). I had a mechanic to replace the module located just above the wiper motor behind the three screws and it successfully resolved the problem. I first tried swapping out the switch on the steering column with no positive results; wipers still would not turn off.

On the wiper motor under the hood is a control module. remove the three screws and replace the part. You can get the part at most parts stores.

This is possible for anyone even remotely mechanically inclined and worth the effort. The part alone at a Chevy dealer is $161 plus the labor to install...expect $250 to $300 versus about a $70 fix at home.
This takes 60-90 minutes from start time. Tools required are small torx screwdriver, wiper removal tool, 13 mm socket, couple of small flat head screwdrivers, small wire brush and Large Channel Locks.
Step 1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
Step 2. With grease pencil, mark alignment of windshield wipers on windshield and then disconnect washer hoses to windshield wipers.
Step 3. Pop off bolt caps on windshield wipers and take off bolts.
Step 4. Potential problem...utilizing a windshield wiper removal tool (purchase one at Advance Auto for $13.21 including tax), remove windshield wipers. I tried a gear pull, but couldn't seat it properly below the blades. Do not try to rock them back and forth or pry them off with a screwdriver. It is easy to damage the groove on the blades and mounts. After removing clean wiper mounts with small steel brush.
Step 5. Unscrew torx screws on each end of wiper grill and remove four tabs at bottom of grill. Also, there is a plastic inserted screw that pops in and out in the middle of the grill that needs to be unseated. Use a flat head screwdriver to do that.
Step 6. Remove antenna
Step 7. Slide grill up out of the way to reach wiper motor.
Step 8. Remove four bolts of what looks like a protective piece of metal over the wiper motor housing for easier access to the pulse control board.
Step 9. Remove the three screws with small torx screwdriver holding pulse control board in place and carefully disconnect six prong connector.
Step 10. Attach new pulse control board. ($59.99 special order at Autozone, 1 day to arrive). This is a bit tricky. It takes quite a bit of force to get those darn prongs seated into the connector. I actually used some large Channel Locks to squeeze them together. Once they initially start inserting, it slides right on, but it is tough to get it started.
Step 11: Reinstall using the three torx screws into the wiper motor.
Step 13 - 21...reverse the order and put everything back together. e careful with the two sheet metal screws that hold the wiper grill in place. The end of the wiper grill is fragile and you can break the screw holes.
Good luck.

I have a 2003 that has the wipers only running in high speed and won't shut off. I can relate with the guy who talked about the danger of removing the fuse in high traffic conditions.

The Chevy Dealer in Brookings, Oregon wants $175 for the control module. Is there a cheaper way to replace it?

2003 Impala wipers don't work have power and new motor but nothing moving when on

Depending on what your trying to do with wipers, I'd want to see voltage on the gray and or purple wire. See the black wire at the bottom that is ground, a good ground is a must. Hey Jeff, I'm not trying to bug you. If I spend time trying to look up info, I'm going to post it. I don't care if the question has already been answered. Have a good day.

2003 Pontiac Montana wipers not working how to fix

First you need a wiring diagram, free at http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Then you need a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter to test the circuit . Then if your not familiar with automotive electrical systems testing ,go on youtube an check out Electric Testing Techniques You Need to Know Also having a factory diagnostic trouble shooting chart would also be usefull . You could just start replacing parts , you mite get lucky . The wiper motor is a high fail part , so is the switch ..You could find the fuse is blown ! But fuse's don't usually blow without a reason . Short to ground , low resistance . ( high current flow) Also knowing how they work and what all is involved in making them work.
The Wiper/Washer System consists of the following components:
• Windshield wiper/washer switch
• Windshield wiper motor module
• Windshield wiper motor
• Windshield washer pump motor
• FRT/WPR/WSHR 25A fuse

Wiper/Washer System Operation
The windshield wiper motor module is part of the windshield wiper motor cover and controls wiper motor operation. The windshield wiper motor is a 2 speed motor and is operated at low speed in all modes except HIGH. The accessory voltage supply circuit to the windshield wiper motor assembly is used to operate the wiper motor in all of the low speed modes. The accessory voltage supply circuit to the windshield wiper/washer switch is used to supply the windshield wiper switch signal circuits and the wiper motor high speed circuit.
When the wiper/washer switch is in the LOW position voltage is supplied through a 24K ohm resistor within the switch to the windshield wiper switch signal 2 circuit, and accessory voltage is supplied to the windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit. The reduced voltage from the wiper switch signal 2 circuit and accessory voltage from the wiper switch signal 1 circuit causes the wiper motor module to close the wiper motor accessory voltage supply circuit to the wiper motor low speed terminal.
Windshield wiper/washer system MIST operation is identical to LOW operation except that the MIST switch is a press and release type. When the wiper switch is moved to the MIST position and released, low speed wiper motor operation is started and will continue until 1 cycle is complete. If the wiper switch is moved to the MIST position and held, the windshield wiper motor will operate in the LOW mode until the switch is released.

Don't the wipers work in any mode ?

Windshield wipers will not shut off

Hello, my name is Ben. This is a very common problem for GM. You have a wiper motor control module and it is most likely defective. The module is bolted directly onto the wiper motor which is mounted to the firewall under that long plastic cowl just in front of the bottom edge of your windshield.

Can not get windshield wipers to turn off on 2003 Silverado 1500. They will turn on high speed when switch is moved but will not quit working in off position.

You have a bad wiper module.Just go under the hood and remove the connector at the wiper motor and remove the cover. You need a 20 torx bit.Pry the module out and replace it per the instructions in the new module box.You can get this part at the dealership. You will need to add sealer to the edges of the cover to keep water out.Hope this helps.Good luck.
