Elantra 2003 wont start

Occasionally my Elantra will not start. The only way to start it when it does this is to turn the ignition on then take the starter relay out and use a wire to start the car (it starts everytime this way) have had the car to an auto election and they do not know why this happens. Any clues as I never know whether the car will start with the key or I have to "hot wire" it

Could be a problem with the clutch pedal switch. I'd have a look under the dash first to make sure no wires have been knocked of the pedal switch. If there's no sound, not even a clunking sound it may be the solenoid. I'd first want to eliminate the pedal wiring. Remove the small wire on the starter (most likely a spade type terminal) and using a piece of insulaated wire attach it to the starter where you removed the spade. Flick the other end of the wire on the positive of the battery. If the starter operates your looking at the pedal switch/ relay fault. If not its the starter. MAKE SURE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL BEFORE TRYING THIS. Ignition switched off. That way it will crank but not start.

Has similar problem, just got back from the shop and they said it's the neutral safety switch.

Tip on starting even with a broken switch:
1.) Turn the key all the way to start position (you will hear the gas pump humming and all the lights should be on)
2.) press the clutch pedal all the way down (if it starts, then it's fine, if not, proceed to step 3)
3.) release the pedal slowly and just slightly (an inch or so).
-->on the first try, you should hear a slight click and feel the car moving slightly. That's the point where the car tried to start.
4.) Repeat step 3 for several times if the car doesn't start until you are able to grasp that exact point and once you hear that click, hold the clutch at that point and the engine should fire away.

Of course this is just for temporary counter measure, I have to do this because this is my commuter car and I got to find a way to have a reliable and predictable start. Hope this helps.

Car randomly wont turn on/bogs down and dies

Could be a bad engine ground connection. There should be a cable connected between the engine block and the frame. If this is loose, it could cause intermittent failure of your ignition and your starter to operate properly.

I have 99 Hyundai elantra that has a problem starting occasionally, if I let it sit for a while it will eventually start. It turns over but won't fire.

Check your fuse's. ECU inparticular. It will be a 20A fuse. I had a problem where the O2 sensor harness was creating a short & blowing the fuse. Finally figured out it was the harness that had worn down because it was laying on the axle. Repair the harness, new fuse & your in business. whatever you do K.I.S.S. Keep it super simple & it wont fail!

Sounds like you have a bad or burned contact in the ignition switch.

Amazing!.. Belts don't 'ignite!' Never have and never will. Find yourself a good mechanic/technician and get them to look at it.

Without diagnosing this problem myself, the possible causes are MANY!
Best solution is take the vehicle into a Hyundai Dealership and have it diagnosed/troubleshot by a qualified technician.
