Where is the crankshaft position sensor located on the 1996 eclipse 2 liter non turbo? Got a 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo. Engine turns over but whill not start. Was told it might be the Crank shaft sensor. Is there a way for me to diagnose myself? Where is it located and can I replace Myself?
Hello. One way to check if it is working is when you try to start the car does the needle move on you tac? If not then your crank sensor is more then likely the problem. It is located on the backside of the engine under the intake manifold. If is in about the center of the block. There will be a 10mm bolt holding the sensor in. If you decide to change it yourself (not to terrible of a job) unplug the sensor, remove the bolt and spin it back and forth slightly while pulling it out. It may be stoburn and you might have to work at it for a little bit (not a done of room) but it will come. When it's out the sensor will be shaped kind of like an L. I have changed a few of these over time and they can be a little stoburn. To install just reverse the process.
You Crankangle positioning sensor is located on the left side of your valve cover, it should look like a round metal piece, with some wires connected, there is a white wire connected to it for more clarity.
Whatever you do, mark the sensor exactly how it sits. One slight movement of that sensor will make your car run horrible.
Its a very touchy sensor and you ushally want to stay away from it at any cost unless you are changing it.
But make sure you mark it very carefully.
What do you do if it breaks before it come out of the hole. Is it safe to push in the engine, or call in a machanic to remove the rest.

This is my sons car, and he is out of state. He took it to a local repair shop and was told it was the crankshaft sensor and it also should have the timing belt replaced. He doesn't know anything about whether the code were read. He doesn't have alot of money, so I am triing to find out if this is something that can be done without mech. Any info would be appriciated. Any idea where it is located?
Have you tried reading the engine codes with a code reader?
