What octane rating should I use?
Octane is a measure of how smoothly the feul burns, You can never have too much octane. The reason you get more power from high octane is because it burns fractionally slower, allowing more pressure time to push the piston. Low -er octane has more tendency to explode (in pockets) versus smooth burning, resulting in popping or pinging, more unburned fuel comming out the exhaust, and potential damge to piston or valves. So I did not actually answer the question, but hope I helped. Use a little mid grade and listen to the engine under power, (rev engine), for pinging or popping. If it sounds smooth, you should be good. If not, upgrade.
SOURCE: What is the recommended octane rating for my 2002 Toyota Celica?
You have a high compression ratio engine and it's recommended to use 91 octane. You can get away with the 89 octane, but the higher the better for the engine. Less chances of detonation (Engine Knock), Take note that it's best to keep faith full on servicing the Engine for Oil and filter changes. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

the best you can get, is better stop engine ping noise
SOURCE: what octane rating fuel should i use? 91 or 96?
With the way that fuels are refined now days, plus how the engines are built and monitored with computers for maximum efficiency and power, you may use the lowest octane and still be fine.
