1993 Jeep GCL 4.0L Problems with engine not idling and trans not down shifting. Then it would crank, but not start (no spark). I replaced the ECM and it started right up, but still had the low idle and was not down shifting. The next day it was back to cranking, but not starting again! Any ideas?

SOURCE: 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Won't start

Are you getting spark from coil wire when cranking? If so, check the cap & rotor. If not, the most common failure is the crank sensor. If you have a 4,0, you can find it on the drivers side of the bellhousing, in line with the flywheel, just where it's annoying to work on. There is a test you can make, but I don't have the specific test values or the correct terminals to check. (you can find that info in any half decent manual.
Good luck

It sounds like your new crank sensor is defective. It should be under warranty.

Will stall while idling in drive and not restart right away. Jeep will seem to turn over, and RPMs rev up, then the engine dies.

no its more than likely not related to the trans,if you are having shift problems though,i would have the tps(throttle position sensor) checked out.another thing to check is the vacume lines to and from the egr valve and the valve its self for proper operation.

Check the ecm fuses if they can't communicate using an obd reader then the ecu isn't getting any power different car company's label them differently but look for the ones that are labeled something like ecu, ecm, engine controller, or something like that I hope this helps

Transmission slipping. does not appear to be shifting properly. replaced ecm. got tcm from jeep grand cherokee same engine (4.7L). notice significant burning/smoke after driving exhaust manifold. not...

U are going to need to overhaul the transmission here, the smoke is the trans overheating from excessive slippage i suspect.code for wrong gear ratio's mean the input and output shaft speed are out of symc for the gear the trans is in, the 3rd or 4th gear is the usual codes, this sometimes is caused by defective speed sensors but most times the trans is slipping and the TCM detects that and sets a code

2000 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L ECM replacement

well you wont need to change the ecm if its not burt yet.
try correcting the short first before you do burn out the comp.
if this is the model with the in line coil pack you will need to make sure the heater hoses are not drooping down on the pack.use wire straps to raise the heater hoses just off the pack.you may want to remove the pack and put some dielectric lube on the spark plug boots so it goes down all the way on the spark plug.when the plug miss fires and causes the engine to stumble the comp raises the idle to compesate.then the plug fires again and the idle surges.
hope this helps

Engine cranks. sparks but does not start. fuel pressure ok

Have you replaced the crank sensor? The crank sensor on top of the trans. bell housing does control the injector pulse through the ECM.
The sensor is a common problem with the Jeeps. Sometimes the sensor stops working when the engine is hot and will start again when it cools off and sometimes it dies from oil leaking on top of it or it just dies.

Inconsistant transmission problems on 2003 jeep gcl

Many times this is caused by either a sticking electronic shift solenoid in the transmission or the trans fluid and filter need to be replaced, has the trans been serviced, it should have been done at 60,000 miles.
