That shouldn't be necessary.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal
first (always), then the positive.
- Follow the positive lead to either the solenoid or the starter with solenoid; if the solenoid is not mounted on th starter, follow the cable leaving the solenoid to find the starter.
- The starter should have sufficient clearance and is mounted at the junction of the transmission's bell housing and the engine block.
- Disconnect the incoming cable from battery or solenoid.
They normally have only 2 or 3 bolts to remove and will then pull right out.
I recommend to anyone that they should have an aftermarket service manual if they intend to do any work on their vehicles and I like Haynes over Chilton.
