From what you describe it sounds like the shift linkage needs adjustment. Was any work done on the transmission,or did you bottom out recently? I don't think it's electrical. Also don't keep a lot of keys on your ignition key ring this can wear the key slot and also cause the erratic starts.Good luck.

It sounds like your ignition switch to me. I had a problem when I would shut the car off, sometimes it would start right up, sometimes I could not get it to go at all. I would try all sorts of tricks, nothing worked all the time. I looked into it, on the ignition switch there is a small wire that connects for the security system. If that wire breaks off, the car will not start. Sometimes that wire is close and the car will start, then it will move and not work a second later. Not sure if that is causing your problem, but it is something to look into.
SOURCE: Key stuck in ignition
Under the steering column is an access plug. Remove the plug and insert a small shaft driver into the hole and push up gently, the key will release.
SOURCE: Can I bypass the Passlock security system?
never heard of this happening before ,sounds more like the code reader behind the steering lock is playing up.If it is then its dealer only, have a funny feeling this could be an expensive repair.Sorry i couldnt be much more help but this fancy electronic stuff is designed to stop general mechanics like myself from doing repairs.
SOURCE: car won't start!!! & ABS Light on
Sounds like carbon build up on the contacts inside the electrical ignition switch which is not the key cylinder. Its located on the lower steering coluum if coluum shift or if you have a floor shift it will be inside the console
SOURCE: turn the key and nothing happens,no crank,no sound,no start
It seems that you have a loose wire, bad connector or perhaps the main computer itself that is causing a problem If the shop is not seeing any codes, or codes come and go, likely I'm right...but someone is going to have to actually do some intensive testing to find the real cause. You can likely get another computer from a local scrapyard far cheaper than what the dealer will charge you...as far as wiring, you need a good accurate schematic a good volt/ohmeter and lots of time to trace wiring. When checking connectors test the pin, then probe the wire going into the pin...often the problem is where a wire meets the backside of the pin, either corroding or breaking..This also applies to any modules such as the security system...what you see on the dash does not always tell you that connection to components is good. This is not a "fix, but rather, a direction to go in. (exactly what I"d need to do if I was there)
Right now, everything is suspect including fuel system, till you rule it out!!!
