I started smelling gas at times in my 2004 6-cyl Saturn Vue. Then it started being a little hard to start cold and ran rough for a few seconds, sometimes dying the first start. It seems to run fine after just a short warm up.
On a cold start, it also makes a ''whirring'' sound for a fraction of a second just as it fires and you release the starter. I almost sounds like the starter would if it didn't disengage fast enough but it's not as loud or ''metallic''as that would be. I might also think it sounds like a relay chattering. It's loud enough to hear from the driver's seat.
The car has just 35,000 miles on it.

I have the same whirring. I think it is the starter not disengaging fast enough. I have even had my head under the hood when someone else starts it. havn't replaced starter yet. hope it doesn't chew up my fly wheel. that wouldbe abig job for me. goodluck
