Installed rebuilt starter 1996 saturn SW - now same problem~

Ok ------learned my
lesson this time
Bought rebuilt starter on ebay - in California with 1 yr warranty
.......now the clown has disappeared and I believe the starter is no good
[had it only 2 months] will never again buy parts from ebay!

It started fine on thursday - came out of a store and it was dead
Guy tried to help - but suggested I just try it again and it started~
drove home and parked it
Won't start at all this morning [or last night]
It is not thebattery because I replaced it before I knew it was the starter [few months ago]

Since nothing happens when I turn the key - I have to assume it's a
lemon rebuilt.
It's stuck in the driveway - but will have AAA within a few days to get it
towed to the tech
In the meantime -I located a "new" starter here in my local area for
$100 [no core charge] The Saturn dealer
wants 268.00 !!
Before I buy it - I'm hoping it isn't the alternator
Since it won't crank up - how would I know if this is a "new" problem like the alternator?
Thanks -

    Thanks for both replies

    Tomorrow I will check solenoid

[neighbor should know where that is]

    As for battery light

ALL dash lights come on with key insert and attempt to start.

    Thx again

Take a 12 volt test light and make sure the starter solenoid is getting a signal from the ignition to crank over, check the battery connections for any sign of corrosion or a poor connection, have the battery tested, u could have a bad ignition switch or some other electrical fault keeping the car from cranking, get a large number of posts on this car about no cranks, so do the tests, don't guess.

1999 4 dr sw dohc starts and runs fine for about 10 miles then it just dies could be doing 60 or 25 mph sometimes will start after a minute and other times it takes longer repeats itself

The LW started in 00, if it is a 99 then it is an SW. I would start by replacing the crank sensor which is installed into the rear of the block, behind the starter on the SW. Most likely easier to replace on the LW as they moved the starter to the front of the engine in the 2.2 LW engine. Cheap part.

Can't find the starter on my 1998 saturn sw1, need diagram

find the battery, just under the battery is a large bell shaped contraption between the engine and the transmission, it is called the bell housing oddly enough. the starter bolts into the bell housing on the back side of the engine. it is under the intake manifold and is a ***** to get to. buy a rebuilt starter and take it to a shop which has a lift and lots of extensions and universals in their socket sets. behind the starter in the engine block is a crank sensor, while your starter is out have the guy replace the crank sensor, another common saturn fault.

Heater core removal/instalation

Underneath the dash not visible not reachable until you take the dash off. I've never heard of any vehicle that you don't have to remove ar take apart the dash. Taking it apart should not be difficult just tedious. Get a Haynes Repair Manual. You'll learn how to take it apart step by step, no guessing.

1996 Saturn SL, 4 cylinder, auto trans.. Car starts and runs fine. However if you turn off the ignition when the car is hot, the car will not start again until the engine cools down. When you turn the key...

I also had the same problem with my 1996 Saturn SL1, and it also was the starter. I thought it was an electrical problem until, just on a whim I pulled the starter. One of the brushes was almost gone and the commutator looked like hell. I cleaned up the commutator and brushes, and it spun like a top for about a month, until the worn out brush finally died. I also ordered a new starter the same day of the cleaning. Just a word of advice if you will be buying a new starter, go on Ebay Motors and find the store dbelectrical. They sell brand new starters for $49.95 with no core charge plus $12 UPS shipping. So $61.95 vs $150+ at your local parts store....Myself and my friend from work have both bought and daily use starters from them with no problems or complaints to report.
