There should be a check engine light on.You will need to retrieve the diagnostic coded from the computer to help you pin point why this is occurring. Go to autozone they will do this for free.

Hi Lisa,is this noise louder when accelerating and turning the steering wheel? I would guess you have a worn out constant velocity joint.

I would remove the rear drive shaft and apply silicone grease to the slip joint. (Inside of front yoke)

check for play in the driveline universal joints. If there is play, replace joint. Let us know if you need DIY instructions.

NO, it is not safe to drive a a vehicle with accelerator problems. I will say for you to have this issue with a Jeep Liberty is very unusual.

Why would a dealer not be able to find the issue?
Start by checking codes.
If you have to, drive with a scanner,not a code reader on it,to capture data.
If it only has issues when turning the steering wheel and is speed related with the turning, you have a place to start.
I assume the dealer did all that.
I have a 2004 V8,so let me know, what help you need.

Have the cruise control module checked. They recalled some about improper wiring and fire hazards when the vehicles are parked; but in motion problem might cause vehicle to act like cruise was kicked in.
