the electric power steering motor is going bad,the motor is about $100 not installed,thats the issue bad motor,easy to fix

there is no power steering fluid,,,,,none,,,its a electric motor thats on the column inside the car under the dash,,,the motor goes bad and overheats and shuts off,you need a new motor for the electric power steering,,,,,no ionhas power steering fluid,,,,the leak you have under the hood is something else,,,maybe on the right side of the engine there is a cam block off plate,that seal leaks alot,,,,

there is no power steering pump,its all electric,,,the motor and module are attached to the steering column in the dash,,,if it just shut down while parking thats normal to protect it from overheating,,but if under normal driving it should not do that,,if it is doing thats it means you need a new steering column,,,its a normal ion issue

To fix the power steering problem with the 2004 Saturn Ion is simple, replace the power steering motor. It is held on with two bolts, one bolt is difficult to get to because it is hard to see. Remove the two gold bolts and unplug the motor. Put the new motor in and plug it in and you are good to go. The part number is: 20995579 and I paid $187.53 and it only took me 20 minutes. Twenty minutes because one bolt is hard to reach. You will find the motor up under the dash board where the brake pedal is, up by the steering column. You will have to lay on your back and look up, there are 4 silver bolts - leave those alone, they are part of the motor, it is the two gold bolts you need to remove. Good luck to all of you, it worked for me. You do not need expensive repairs or the entire steering column replaced!!! I reported this problem to Saturn and they are not at this time doing a recall. I am a 50 yr old female and did the repair myself!!

Should be a cap under the hood that says power steering fluid

I had the same problem a while back and the issue was two pink 30 amp fuses under the hood. Saturn watned to replace the steering column and that damned computer, but come to find out after doing some research it was jsut those lame fuses try that and see if it helps you. and there are two of them

The motor on the power steering is overheating which causes the thermal overloads to trip.

go tho the junk yard and buy a motor for a 2004 thru 206 ion or a 2004 thru 2008 chevy colbalt.

they are all the same. You may have to buy the wholle steering colum but you can remove the motor with 2 - 12mm bolts and a quick dissconnect pulg. Replace just the motor as the whole steering colum is a bit more complicated. the dealerships want you to replace the whoe steering colum, in fact that is the only way they sell the parts. It is a scam. Just the motor needs to be replaced.
I have done it on 4 different ions. try to get a motor with few as possible miles and as new as possible. I have paid between $50 and $125 for these. The dealer wants $900 fnad about $500 to install. It is very simple to do. Only 2 bolts.

I have a 2006 Saturn ION as well and the PWR STR light came on and the power steering went out. When i turn off the car and turn back on it's fine for a while but goes out again in a day or so. I called Saturn and they said it is the power steering which is electric and to fix it i would have to replace the whole steering column! If it is not the fuses which i haven't checked yet then it will cost me $850.00 to replace. that's not counting whatever else they find and charge me for. I was looking under 2004 Saturn Ion and they have a lot of the same issues. I don't know where to look for the fuses at though I'm thinking under the steering wheel if anyone knows please let me know.
