SOURCE: I have a 1991 Buick Park Avenue. Runs rough in

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours.
To correct this problem I want you to get a can of intake cleaner (ABOUT $5.00) from any local auto parts store like NAPA or Carquest, do not use carburetor spray, intake cleaner only or u will damage the Teflon coating inside the throttle valve and air bypass valve, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: Rough idle at start up

My 1997 lesabre has developed the same problem. I replaced plugs, wires, pcv valve and O2 sensor to no avail. Also tried several tanks of high octane. Yesterday I left the store and it wouldn't start at all. Had the car towed to a good local shop. Today they said it starts fine and has been all day! They checked everything they could think of and can find nothing wrong. The head mechanic suspects the crank sensor but said it should give a check engine lite if it was having a problem. Of course the third time I started it after picking it up the damn thing barely ran for a minute or so before finally smoothing out. No check eng lite. This is becoming very frustrating!

My 1994 Honda Accord Lx running richemission: failed emission test.

When the mechanical timing "slipped" the valve timing was affected. Valves can be bent if they strike a piston. Have a compression test performed on each cylinder. If the compression is low on any cylinder, likely the cause is a bent valve caused by the mis-timed engine. The cylinder head will have to be removed and the bent valves and valve guides replaced as part of a "valve job."

My car won't stay running when cold.I replaced the idle air control valve, and it didn't fix the problem.

The idle air control valve is designed to adjust for the load on the engine to maintain the idle quality. When it's cold out, it's more important that the engine temperature sensor is working correctly so that it can trim the fuel richer to compensate for the cold running conditions. Also, a dirty Mass Air Flow sensor could give you problems with your idle. A shop could easily diagnose the poor idle quality for a reasonable fee if you don't feel like throwing parts at it again. Have you experienced unusually poor fuel economy or better than normal fuel economy this winter?

take the car tothe shop, let them diagnos the problem, find out which sensor is bad and change it your self. you'll have to pay for the diagnosis, but at least you will find out which part to change.

Bad intake manifold gasket?

Sounds like a blown head gasket.

Poor fuel mileage; sluggish possible mis fire idle has very low rpms no indication of check engine light at higher speeds freeway speeds runs good but poor fuel economy wheres the power?

Could be a lot of things, but if you have not replaced the air intake plenum gasket, this could be causing some of the issue. Spraying corborator cleaner around the gasket with the engine running should cause the engine to smooth out for a short period of time - just a diagnostic.

1987 Volkswagen Jetta GL rough idling problem.

Hi!
So far you have done all but change the leads! This will help dramatically BUT if your head gasket is blown I'm afraid you'll have real difficulty in get it to run smooth as water/steam is possibly mixing with the fuel causing very poor ignition.
I did the same as you on a Golf as soon as the new leads were fitted Bingo a New Car, However there wasn't a head gasket issue.
Good Luck and A Happy New Year to you and your Family.
